Brand To Sing at Concert
. Ballads and ditties will "be heard
in, Schwab tomorrow night when
Oscar Brand makes a Folklore
Society-sponsored appearance at
8. ' ’ - .
IVThe " folk ' monger, famous for
his “backroom ballads” and his
many ' published comments on
American folk singing, is present
ing the concert as part of a pro
ject of the Folklore Society to
bring well-known folk singers to
this campus.
“Brand is very experienced as
an entertainer,” society president
Herbert 'Frank said. “He draws
many of his songs from his war
experiences- and has authored
many songs that appear in his
repertoire.
"BRAND TRANSFERS many of
his own lyrics to known music,”
Frank added. “He can also take
an original song and sing it in
the tradition of its origin.” The
folk monger’s humor, Frank said,
is sharp and in very good taste.
“Oscar Brand is an excellent
example of the modern folk
singer,” Folklore Society vice
president Sol Brody commented.
“He brings songs alive, changing
them to fit his own feelings. This
is known as the ‘folk- process’
and Brand is an active agent of

The society booked Brand for
the concert, Brody said, because
they thought his style and humor,
would appeal to a college audi
ence.
“His spiciness,” Brody said, “is
very much in the college idiom.”
