OUTCAST OF THE ISLANDS- (British) •
Produced and directed by Carol Reed, based on the novel by
Joseph Conrad; photographed in Ceylon. With Trevor Howard,
Ralph Richardson, Wendy Hiller, Kerima, Robert Morley.
That Carol,Reed fine of . the finest of contemporary British
directors cannot be denied (STARS LOOK DOWN, FALLEN
IDOL, THIRD MAN, ODD MAN OUT) and OUTCAST OF THE
ISLANDS is one of his 'mmt artistic accomplishmerits. Dif—
ferent in many respects from his previous films, it is a character
study of Conrad's Willems, a degraded, almost maniacal crook,
'magnificently portrayed by Trevor Howard. The story con
cerns Willem's struggles and associations• with those around
him: Captain Lingard, his "patron," - (Ralph Richardson) a
trader rival, Almayer (Robert Morley), and a native girl
Kerirna.
