Homecoming Dates from 1903

On a day similar to today in
1903, the student ,body of the
University heard an address by
the governor of the state. The
special day was then called gov
ernor's Day.
Today, -this same Governor's
Day,- now known - as Alumni
Homecoming will be celebrated
by the return of alumni to cam
pus and the Penn State-Syracuse
football game. .
The.forerunner of our present
homecoming dates back 59 years:
In 1903, the Board of Trustees of
the Agricultural College of Penn
sylvania, as the University was
known then, acted on a suggestion
of President George Atherton and
set aside a day called Governor's
Day.
IT WAS intended that the gov
ernor of the state, accompanied

by men prominent in state affairs
should address the student body.
Thus, the first Governbr's Day
was observed with the gbvernor
and several state troops in attend
ance.
Governor's Day 'became an an
nual holiday at the University, but
the name wars later changed to
Pennsylvania :Day. Traditionally,
Pennsylvania Day was celebrated
each fall on a ;home football game
weekend.
In 1915, as more and more alum-
ni began to choose Pennsylvania
Day as the day to return to the
campus, University officials be
gan to notice: the importance of
this special weekend.
IN 1920. the first Alumni Home
coming as we know it was cele
brated. At this first official home
coming football game, the Nittany
Lions defeated Dartmouth, 14-7.

In 1931; -various fraternities- on
campus instituted the practice of

homecoming festivities. Thi4 year,
35 fraternities registered fOr the
Interfraternity Council Home
coming Lawn Display Contest.
The Homecoming - Queen Con
test was started a few years prior
to 1940. However, in 1941 the pro
gram •wit dropped and. was not
resumed 'lor 10 years. In 1952-the
contest, sponsored by the. Thes
pians, was resumed again. 'Today
it is sponsored' by the Under
graduate Student Government. '
This year's show, entitled "A
Golden Walk of Progress," ob
serves the centennial of the Mor
rill Land Grant Act,.which estab
lished the state agricultural col

Hortkulture Show to Celebrat e
Centennial of Laid Grant Act
The 49th annual Horticulture
Show will be held in the Ice
Skating Pavilion today and tomor
row from , S . a.m. to 7 p.m.
The siiow has been dedicated to
Russell E. Larson, director of Ag
ricultural I and Home Economics
Extension; and associate dean of
agriculturr. ,
AMONG THE highlights of the
show will be a 100 square foot
model of Penn State's "Ag Hill."
Other exhibits will feature the
Federal Hatch Act of 1887, the
first Penn State Horticulture
