PAGE TWELVE Canaday Lecture 'Hectic Pace' Called Chief Art By DONNAN BEESON News Editor One of the biggest problems for contemporary art is the prece dence life's hectic pace has taken over it, John Canaday, art critic for The New York Times, said Friday night in Schwab. His talk was sponsored by •the Artists and Lecture Series. IN CONTRAST to other times; today there is no single ideal held by all men, so the, artist out of neßessity creates something which is Understandable only to himself, Canady explained. "What ybu gain from art is up to you. People like myself arc forced to act as middle men as -I am doing now." Aside from the middle man, Canady cited museums, art cours es, books and general publicity as other channels that set our standards of taste in art. - "We take in art as it is dished out to us." The trouble with this method lies in the fact that there are a vast number of artists who are drowned out by the "second raters" who ride through the channels, he said. Through ex perience, Canaday said, he has New College Diner Downtown Between thelMovtes I • . 4 :s , •. =Mil ENE 21 GREAT TOBACCOS MAKE 20 WONDERFUL SMOKES! He titled one of the problems in art "diminishing treturnism:" This concept is exemplified by the artists' belief that they are making progress .when they re fine an idea, which hoWever valid it might be, has already been re fined 'long ago, he said. "Barnett New m a ri's 18-inch canvas with one straight line on it does not have much to do with you and me," he said; illustrating this situation. The other major problem, Can aday said, is that of words. "THERE IS too much talk about art. It is good 'to a degree because it gives critics such as myself something to talk about. Art is a personal thing and does not need, or should not need, the popularizing it is getting." __ I IN • - ; THEI DAILY COLLEGIAN, UNIVERSITY PARK, PENNSYLVANIA.
