Blue Grass Growth
Hindered by Fungus
Ey CLAUDIA LEVY
If your favorite gulf course has
been looking peaked lately...A may
be afflicted with a case of a rela
tively _ new disease whibb has
struck severely at Pennsylvania's
IVlerion Blue Grass in the last - few
years. .
THE CAUSE of this disease, a
fungus, was identified by Houston
B. Couch, associate professor of
plant pathology, who is in his
third' year with the research
project.
The Merion strain,
,introdueed
in 1952, is a popular grass for
home lawns, fairways and parks.
Couch said.
"It's a rugged grass and takes a
lot of tramping," he added.
live years ago a disease appeared
which, struck at the roots and
crowns of the grass. This disease
killed the grass within three years
of its planting," he said.
The disease is • very severe in
Pennsylvania, Couch said, particu
larly
. in .the-southeastern section
of the state around Philadelphia.
Seed production and sale is big
'there, he said, but the adverse
publicity about Merion Blue Grass
proiripted the Pennsylvania Turf
grass Council to grant Couch
$4.800 ': ., vinually to work on a .con-

trol of the disease afflicting the
grass.
In addition to uncovering the
cause of the disease, in their first
year of research Couch and his
associates found two fungicides
that can kill the fungus. Last year
they plotted a standard of-chemi
cal control_ and worked on the
development of that control. •
The disease? fs;yet unnamed,
can be wiped but completely,
Couch said, in those isolated areas
which are treated. However, the
cost would be too great to elimi
nate the disease in the state com
pletely, he added;
This year the researchers will
conduct field trials on . Philadel r
nhia golf course'grass which they
hope willzhelß them predict dis
ease occurrence with greater in
sight. Laboratiiry and greenhouse
testing Will concentrate on the de
velopment of the disease hoW
light, soil and air temperatures,
nutrition and humidity affect it.
'WE PLAN to study the motion
of the disease, taking it apart and
discovering how environmental
factors affect it," Couch said.
The researchers also are study
ing the variability of the strength
of the fungus, which is more
severe iri different parts of the
Mate.
