SEPTEMBER 16. 1962 Rip Roars Into 13th Season Silver-haired, Charles 4. Engle is not, a very superifi tious person. He doesn't think the fact that this is his 13th season as head' football .coach at Penn State will have any effect on the results of the 1962 season. The result will be the same as it has been - for the past 12 years under Rip Engle's tutelage: Penn State will have a winning team and Engle will be acclaimed as one of the top coaches in the country. Rip Engle doesn't say this. He doesn't have to say it. His record speaks for itself. When the Lions take the field against Navy in Beayer Sta dium Saturday, Engle will be shooting for his 78th victory since coming to these Penn sylvania hills from Brown Uni versity. His Penn State record reads 77 victories, 34 defeats and four ties. His.overall record shows 105 wins, 54 defeats and eight ties. His record at Brown (19444949) and Penn State (1950-Present) gives him a .percentage of better than .600 and ranks him 12th among the 20 best active coaches: His record includes three straight post-season bowl tri umphs in the past three seasons. His 1959 team (8-2) beat Alabama, 7-0. in the Liberty Bowl. The Lions beat Oregon, 41-12, in 'the 1960 Liberty Bowl after posting a 6-3 regular-season record. Last year th e Nittanies walloped Georgia Tech, 30 - -15, in the Gator Bowl following a 7-3, record in the regular season. ' * * ENGLE BEGAN his coaching career at Waynesboro (Pa.)
