program hfis been the source of
new knowledge about the Uni
versity, President Eric A. Walker
said recently,
The evaluation process begins
when the department to be studied
makes a study of its own situation,
het said. _
This report is available for
study by the team of three to five
visitors who mkke the actual
evaluation. The'evaluators come,
Walker said,' primarily from the
major public and private colleges
and, universities. Pennsylvania,
Cornell, Chicago and Princeton, to
name a few, have been repre
sented on the evaluating teams
-which have been on campus to
date.
The evaluators usually arrive
on Sunday and are briefed by the
five-man Standing Committee on
'Evaluation before beginning work
Monday morning, M. Nelson Mc-
Geary, chairman of the commit
lee, said.
ESTABLISHING their own pro
cedures, most of the teams in
clude talks with the dean of the
college in which the department
is located, the departthent head,
members of, the department and
graduate and undergraduate stu
dents, McCleary continued.
The evaluators also inspect the
department's facilities and ob.!
serve classes.
Before leaving on Wednesday,
the team will meet and present
an oral report to Walker, McGeary
said, in addition to beginning the

be held in the fall.

"The oral report does not differ
radically from the written report
except, perhaps, that the oral re
port deals more directly with
personalities," Walker said. "I
have found these reports frank
and forceful."
THE FOLLOW-UP process be
gins with i'meeting between
Walker, and the members of the
department, after they have:had
an opportunity to study the writ
ten report.
As a result of the program,
Walker said he is more convinced
than fornrierly that there are
"some very, good men and some
very good : departments" at the
University.:
"But the picture is not uni
formly good. There is a lot of
'Work to do and, with the help
of these evaluations, I think we
should get ' , started on the rebuild
ing job as soon as possible, Walker
said.
He said his job is to make it as

Commencement exercises will
be held at 10:30 a.m.,•June 9, in

degrees, including 275 advanced
degrees, 1,815 baccalaureate de
grees, and 470 associate degrees.

said.

will be open to all interested per

be added to the faculty in Sep
tember.
As of last week, when the de
partments of Speech and Metal
lurgy were evaluated, 17 evalu
ations' had been made, Kenworthy
said. Six others are already sched
uled for the fall, and the Depart
ment of Nuclear Engineering will
be studied June 25 to 27.

The Meditation Chapel Choir,
