PAGE EIGHT Study Abroad Plan Termed 'Good', Mahon Praises French Program A general evaluation of the suc-j cess of the Study Abroad program at the University of Strasbourg, France, has been termed "good" by Margaret B. Matson, associate professor of sociology, who is currently directing the 25 stu dents studying at the university. The students have adjusted well to -the Study Abroad program and are benefiting from it, Mrs. Mat -son said. They are self-reliant and resourceful and have been co operative, she . • added. President Eric A. Walker, who visited the UniVersity of Cologne in Germany during the early part of the term, said that the 41 stu dents studying there have been received well. He said that he found a tre mendous interest in the program on the part of the citizens as well as the newspapers and.radio. WALKER ADDED that he thinks the University lias started something which may grow con siderably and be a great deal of credit to Penn State. First let us examine the persistent theory that Shakespeare (or "..The Pearl of the Antilles" as.he is affectionately referred to) is not the real author of his plays. Advocates of this theory insist that the plays are so bill of classical allusions and learned references that they couldn't possibjy have been written by the son of an illiterate country butcher. To which I reply, "Fauol". Was not the great Spinoza's father a humble woodcutter? Wa,s not the immortal Isaac Newton's father a simple isaimd baseman? (The elder Newton, incidentally, 'is one of . history's truly pathetic figures. He was, by all accounts, the greater second second basernan of his time, but baseball, alas, had not yet - .seen invented.) It used to break young Isaac's heart to see hies father get up every morning, put on uniform, -spikes, glove, and cap, and stand alertly behind second base, bent forward, I eyes narrowed waiting, waiting, waiting. That's all—waiting. Isaac loyally sat in the bleachers ' and yelled, "Good show, Dad!" and stuff like that, but every one else in town used to snigger and pelt the Newtons with overripe fruit—figs for the elder Newton, apples for the younger. Thus, as we all know, the f a mous occasion came about when Isaac Newton, struck in the head with an apple, leapt to his feet, shouted, "Europa!" and announced the third law of motion: "For every action there is an, opposite. and equal reaction!" , (How profoundly true these simple words are! Tale, for example, Marlboro Cigarettes. ,Light one. That's the action.- Now what is the reaction? Pleasure, delight, contentment, cheer, and comfort! And why such Li happiteaction?.Bccause you have started with a happy cigirette—a felicitous blend of jolly to baccos, a good-natured filter, a rollicking flip-top box, a merry soft pack. As Newton often Said, "You begin with better makin's, you end with better Smokin's." Small wonder they called him "The Swedish Nightingale!"). .- But I digrw.i. Back to Shakespeare (or '"The Gem of the Ocean" as'he was ribaldly appelated). i Shakespeare's Most ipportant play is,of course, Hamkl; (or !Macbeth, as it is sometimes called). This play tells in li4ing 'color the story of Hablet, rince of Denmark, who one nght sees a ghost upon the bat Dements. (Possibly it is a goa t i he l ila sees: I have ,a first folio edi 'on that is frankly not too legible.) Anyhow, Hamlet, is so upse by seeing the ghost (or goat) . ihat he stabs Polonius and Bare Bodkin. He is thereupon balt o ied to a leather factory by th King, who cries,"Get thee a tannery!" . Thereupon Oph • refuses her food until Laertes shouts, "Get thee to a beariery!" Ophelia is so miffed that she chises her little dog out of _the room, crying, "Out, out damned Spot!" She is firied fifty Shillings for swearing, but Portia, in an eloquent plea' gets the sentence commuted to life imprison ment. Thereupoi King Lear and Queen Nab proclaim -fi festi val,-complete u;ith arnatev theatripils,'kissing gbxnes, and a pie-eating,contest. Everyone has a perfectly splendid time till Banquo's ghost (or goat) shows up. This so unhinges Richard HI that he drowns his =Sin, Butt Malmsey. This leads to a lively diecussionkluring which everyone is Elfed.-The little dog Spot returns to utter the bimodal curtain lines: play for h was sad and sobby, mi t e Alta, tiie But be of cheer— s Marlboros in the libbyl As the slings out arrowsi of outrageoas finals loom closer, perchance the Mainers of Marlboro are not , untoweiet tQ oral. this friendly strifgestion: eat thee' te a library/ THURSDAY, MAY 17. 1962 l':- Navy ColorGt,ard and the Navy Drill Tem.
