some , controversy among jazz

themselves original jazz fans, who
-believe that jazz is the unsophis-i
ticated, primitive expression of

certain part of society, he said.
Them people feel that the mu
sic played by a group like the
Modern Jazz quartet, which per
forms in a more sophirticated,
intellectual style, loses. validity
and is no longer jazz, he said.
However, there is another sub
stantial group that believes that
.the type of music. played by the
quartet is the real direction of
jazz and that the other, olde
form has played itself out, he
said.
AL POLLON, president of the
Jazz Club, said that those fans
known as "traditionalists" some
times feel modern concert jazz
is not real jazz.

deny that anythipg after 1940 is
