THURSDAY. JANUARY 11. 1962 Cagers Rebound From Losses By JIM KAitl. It's qinazing how your world earl. change from a topsy-turvy grey one day to a sunshiny gold the next. That's what happened to cage coach John Egli and he's certainly not complaining. Just one week ago injuries and the departure of Wayne Lundy , reduced Egli's traveling squad to eight men, and _ just three of the eight—Gene Har. ris, John Mit. chell and Joh, Phillips, w eri capable starters, Now Egli is back to his full 10-man squad, and better yet the Lion coact says that he ha: eight boys tha are ; capable o. of turning in a satisfactory job as a starter. In addition to Harris, Mitchell and Phillips, Egli named Ulo Kart and Chuck Marin, two sophomores who just came oft probation; Earl Hoffman and Bobby Donato, who are fully recovered from ankle sprains; and Bob Hutchinson.• the 6-9 giant who never played bas ketball until he came to Penn State. "IT TAKES at least eight men 'to have a good basketball team," Egli said yesterday, "and I think we; have eight now who can do a good job." The injuries to Donato and Hoff man and Lundy's departure came after State rocketed to wins in its first four games. The crippled Lions proceeded to lose six out of their next seven, including five in a row, and things looked mighty bleak. But State . came back to down a fairly respectable Pitt team 74- 62 on the-Panther's home court Saturday and then pulled away from Bucknell 61-5 d at Rec Hall Tuesday after a slow start. Bradshaw Named To Succeed Collier LEXINGTON, Ky. The board did not release Bradshaw's salary. know the annotincement of my being named coeffi will bring mixed emotions," said Bradshaw, 36. "But I hope that the people of Kentucky will eive our program "a unified effort." Asked if he thought Kentucky would regain lost prestige in foot ball, Bradshaw said, "there is no doubt in .my mind that we are going to get there. If it were not so, I wouldn't be here." Collier's contract was bought by the athletics board last week. A screening committee had inter viewed several applicants for the position during the past week. PENNSYLVANIA Egli noticed an increase in hustle and confidence in his cagers after those victories, but he could see the team was developing even in the five-game losing streak. , "Even when we were losing I could see that we were improving as a' team," Egli said. "We played 20 minutes of real good ball against Duke before we just ran out of gaS, "I . don't want to lose any more games and the kids don't either. Nobody's going to pile up any points on us 'the rest of the sea son." THE LIONS are back on the winning side of the ledger at 7-6 now, but Bucknell almost reversed that• record by playing a deliber ate, slow-down type offense Tues day. Despite John Mitchell's brilliant second half scoring spree, the, game was deadlocked at 46 with less than seven minutes to play.! Then a half-court press rattled the Bisons and - State-pulled away in the closing minutes. "I think, our change in strategy upset them," Egli said, "and it also, pepped up our offense: Their slow down tactics had us in a rut." Egli was extremely pleased with , Mitchell's play. "He's a real bat tler," he said. "I'm glad he's on my team.
