He has occupied the first Fello chair in the Budapest Opera' andiTh ilh onic• Orches-1 tra as well as several Anierican: orchestras. STARKER HAS devOted much time 'to private teaching and act-: ing as. a travelling string consult-, ant .for many American commu riity orchestras because he be lieves that the cello is many , decades behind the violin in play ing standards. At present he is on the faculty of Indiana - University. • In an article in the June. 1961. issue of "HiFi Sterio Review,"l Starker explaini that the cello has' been traditionally used for filling in harmonies while the elegant melodic lines are played by the higher instruments. As a result, the article said, the cellist has a great deal of time to squander on what he mainly watching the stage.
