PAGE SIX Georgia Tech Old Hand At Winning Bowl Games The state of Georgia is the home of Ty Cobb, peaches, and Georgia Tech. Try and decide which of those three image evokers has done more to spread the name of that grand old Southern state and you'd have an argument on your hands, but the cold facts point to Georgia Tech. By appearing in 14 post-season bowl games down through the years the Engineers have enhanced the glory of dear ole' Georgia and at the same time set a remarkable record in post season attractions. Tech has won 11 of those 14, including eight in a row over one stretch, a record that ties them with Southern California Sur the most bowl wins in succes sion Penn State will provide the op position in the 15th appearance in the Gator Bowl at Jacksonville, Fla., Dec. 30. During Coach Bobby Dodd's 17 years al Tech the Engineers have won eight of nine post season games. `Six of those eight wins were crammed into less than a six-year period. Tech won in the Orange Bowl in 1952, the Sugar Bowl in 19.. Ti and 1954, the Cotton Bowl in 1955, the Sugar Bowl in 1956 and the Gator Bowl in Dec. of 1956. Tech is the only team to win f;ix howl games in six years. The only loss during Dodd's re gime was to Arkansas, 14-7, in 1960. , The Engineers have made al most 'three limes as many bowl appearances as State. The Lions will he making their fifth post-season showing. State lost to Southern California in the Rose Bowl 14-3. in 1922, and tied SMU in the Cotton Bowl 13-13, in 1947. Depth Hurts Cagers; Sixth Man Needed Depth, an almost .perennial problem for basketball coach John Egli, will hurt the Lions gain this year, especially in early season games when State will be without the services of two letterman Jake Trueblood and John Phillips. Trueblood is on academic pro bation. An NCAA rule prevents him from playing until Jan. 5, the day that winter term classes begin. The 6-5, 192-pound senior averaged 10.4 points a game last year and was the second-lead ing rebounder on the squad. He'll miss Ii games starting with the Maryland encounter at Rec Hall Saturday. - Phillips has been student teach ing and hasn't worked out with the team. Egli will probably use him as a sixth man as soon as he rounds into shape. Egli, figures to start Bobby Donato and John Mitchell in the backcourt, Gene Harris and Earl Hoffman at forward and Wayne Lundy at center. But after that he'll be short on experience and talent, at least until Phillips can play. Right now Egli isn't sure just who his sixth man will be. He has two big men, Bob Hutchin son and Dick Hoe, and three little men. Ken Staub. Ralph Serafin and Chuck Greskovich, who are battling for the job. Egli is counting on the two sophomore starters, Lundy and Donato ,to come through in a, hurry. "They're doing a pretty good job for sophomores," Egli said. "But when you play sopho mores, at least for a while you can expert some good games and some! bad games." One of Egli's biggest prob lems will be replacing Mark Du- Mars, who with his sparkling ball-handling and scoring was a standout guard for three years at State. "We'll miss DuMars," Egli said, "but Mitchell and Donato have showed that they're capable. They're a real pair of hustlers, and I hope they can combine to make up for his loss in the backcourt."
