Penn State’s soccer team
closed its season yesterday
against Pitt the same way it
has been playing all year—
running hard, passing well
but not scoring.
The fact that the Lions outshot
Pitt 17-11 and completely con
trolled the ball had little to do
with the outcome of the game,
which went Pitt’s way, 1-0.
The score was a fitting climax
lo a season of frustrations for
coach Ken Hoslerman and his
booters. The Lions offense simp
ly didn't score enough and as a
result State finished with a dis
mal 3-6 record.
In their first three losses, the
Lions averaged one goal per game.
Overall the offense scored only 16
goals in nine games.
“It was a terrible game,’’ Hos
terman said after the defeat. “We
just had no finish. We outshot
them, outplayed them and out
passed them, but couldn’t get the
ball into the net.”
Pitt got the only score of the
game when forward Bob Culh
berl stole a Lion pass, broke
into the clear and booted a bul
let into the left corner of the
Lion's net at 13:16 of the third

The Daily Collegian learned
yesterday that Jim O'Brien,
sports editor of the Pitt News,
(the University of Pittsburgh's
student newspaper), allegedly
wrote in his daily column: "I
understand that the Collegian
Cowards are trying to rebuild
their ranks this year, but how
can you rebuild on garbage?"
John Black, coach of the un
defeated Cowards, said that he

quarter. The goal was Cuih
beri’s 13th of the season.
It was about the only good shot
Pitt had all afternoon on the
freezing soccer field, but it was
good enough to win the game.
“I can't figure out this team,”
Hosterman said. “They’ve got me
stumped. If ng one had been
keeping score, by comparison to
the two team’s play you would
think we’d be ahead by five or
six goals. But we couldn’t get
going and get that ball into the
nets.”
Hosterman said, however, that
he is looking for a better team
next year. "All signs point lo a
good club next season if we
don’t lose any boys by ineligi
bility," he said.
State’s best chance lor a score
came late in the third quarter
when Tom Flanagan drove a shot
that just missed the right comer
of the Pitt net. The Lions had
numerous other chances but Pitt
goalie Tom Staab came up with
some outstanding saves.

Presents
"BALLAD OF A SOLDIER"
FOUR Showings this w«ek ONLY
Wed. 8 P.IL Thurs. 3,1, 8 P.M.
BALLAD OF A SOLDIER is a contemporary (1960) Russian
tragedy. Not simply an anti-war film, or a war-torn love
story, this film is a lyrical ballad: a tale told with restraint,
poignancy, and stunning versiiilily. A tale of a soldier who
does not come back to bis mother or to his new-found girl
friend or to Russia. Speaking of the direction by G. Chukhrai.
the NEW YORK TIMES said: "Mr. Chukhrai has made his
picture flow in such a swift, poetic way that the tragedy
of it is concealed by a gentle lyric quality.”
The photography and narration smoothly'fuse together into
a moving and powerful motion picture. BALLAD OF A
SOLDIER is one o£ the finest recent examples of the Film
As Art.
Note that because of the Thanksgiving "vacation” we have
added one additional showing ot the film, tonight at S P.M.
Also there will be the regular three showings tomorrow.
Thanksgiving Day, at 3,7, and 9 P.M.
