Holy Cross
Best State

Penn State has faced plenty
of fine quarterbacks this year,
but Holy Cross’ Pat McCarthy
may top them all.
Largely because of McCarthy,
Holy Cross-is 5-2 so far and cur
rently ranked third in the nation
in passing.
The Crusaders have lost to
Villanova (20-6) and Syracuse
(34-8) and defeated Buffalo
(20-8). Boston University (20-7).
Dartmouth (17-13), Dayton {2B
- and Massachusetts (44-7).
Lion Coach Rip Engle figures
McCarthy’s pitching arm will play
a big part in the outcome of to
morrow’s Beaver Stadium clash.
The Lions have been working
all week on pass defense, an
area that has proved troublesome
in past games.
Ever since the second game
of the season, when Miami's
George Mira picked apart
State's aerial armor to lead the
Hurricanes to a 25-8 upset. State
has experienced difficulty in
containing the opposition's pass-
Bowls Out for Rutgers
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP)
—Rutgers University announced
yesterday it is not interested in
being considered for any post
season football game.
Albert W. Twiichell, director
of athletics at unbeaten Rutgers,
said in announcing the decision:
"The hysteria surrounding bowl
feelers is clouding our immediate
objective, which is to win the
games remaining on the schedule
against Colgate and Columbia."

California’s Randy Gold and
Maryland’s Dick Shiner had good
days against State, Gold’s coming'
in a 33-16 defeat and Shiner’s in
a 21-17 victory.
But the Lion coaching staff re
gards McCarthy as more danger
ous than any other QB State will
face this year.
"Personally, I think Mc-
Carthy is the best quarterback
we'll face all year/’ Lion end
coach J. T. White said yester
day. "He definitely has Randy
Gold beat. He’s a lot quicker
and he does more things bet
ter.”
White has spent the past three
weekends scouting the Crusaders.
Last week he watched McCarthy
roll for a total of 244 yards passing
and running in the first half
against Massachusetts.
Lion quarterback coach Joe
Paterno is another McCarthy
booster. "He’s as good as any
quarterback in the East,” Paterno
said yesterday.
"He's excellent on the roll
out run and pass and he's also

was Army’s Tom Blanda,” said

Offer To Get Green
PITTSBURGH (fl - Lenny
Litman, owner of the American
Basketball League’s Pittsburgh
Rens. offered yesterday to trade
Jim Palmer to St. Louis of the
National Basketball Association
for Si Green.
However, Ben Kerner, owner of
the Hawks, termed the proposal
ridiculous. He said Palmer had
jumped from the NBA to the ABL
and if he were in the NBA he
would belong to New York.

Hennessey will be the fastest

Snyder is McCarthy’s favorite
pass-receiver. Going into the
Massachusetts game last week, he;
was among the top five receivers
in the nation.
It was Snyder’s leaping, finger
tip catch of a last period pass at
the goal line that gave the Cru
saders a 17-13 victory over
Darthmouth earlier this year.
