Several of the signs have already succumbed from the battle.

Special facilities for re
search on ground water will
be included in the proposed
earth sciences building, E. F.
Osborn, vice president for re
search, said yesterday.
He said the ground water prob
lem is a matter of major concern
in Pennsylvania and facilities for
studying methods of conservation
and purification of municipal, in
dustrial, and agricultural water
supplies will be included in the
new buildings.
The $3,187.500 building was
aproved last month by the Gen
eral State Authority after the
National Science Foundation
awarded a grant of 5600.000 to
ward construction of the pro
ject. The building had been re
quested by the University for
the 1963-85 budget.
The grant is believed to be the
largest made by the National Sci
ence Foundation to aid univer
sities in providing research and
graduate training facilities, Os
born said.
Facilities for exploring new
uses for lower grade coal will also
be included in the building. These
will include facilities for study
ing the selection and blending of
coals for manufacturing coke, he
said.
Other projects include develop
ing industrial uses for Pennsyl
vania claps ; limestones and other
mineral resources; high temper
a t - u r e geochemistry research;
ultra-high pressure research for
the development and study of new
types of materials; geography re
search on petroleum reservoirs
to explore new possibilities for
the secondary recovery of Penn
sylvania oils.
The new unit will also provide
facilities for a weather station,
seismological laboratory, li
baiy. lecture halls with prepara
tion rooms, classrooms and of
fices.
The new life science building,
which was also approved by the
GSA last month, will include fa
cilities for expanded research in
zoology, physiology and biophys
ics, Osborn said.
More complete facilities than
originally intended will be made
possible, he said, because of an
$831,690 grant from the National
Institute of Health.
Some of the research studies
which will be expanded by con
struction of the new building are
