THE DAILY COLLEGIAN. UNIVERSITY PARK. PENNSYLVANIA State-Syracuse Series Has Produced Thrillers If past records are any indi cation, Penn State's regionally telecast battle with Syracuse at Beaver Stadium Saturday should produce some of the most exciting football in the East .this year. In five games dating back to 1956 the winning team's margin of victory has been eight points or less. Syracuse has beaten State for three years straight, but in two of those games the Orange were hanging on at the end of the game. In 1959 Syracuse opened up a commanding 20-6 lead in the third quarter. But late in the game two stunning touchdown runs by Rog er Kochman put State within two points of the Orange. However, Kochman was stopped at the line of scrimmage on the two-point conversion try and Stale lost 20-18. Syracuse went on to an undefeated season and was named the top team in the country. But Galen Hall passed to half back Dick Pae for a fourth quar ter touchdown and Hall kept him self for the two-point conversion to cut the score to 21-15. With time running out Hall moved the Lions from their own 11 to the Syracuse 4, the key play being a 46-yard pass to Bob Mi tinger. But there the drive ended as two passes were batted down in the end zone by Syracuse de fenders. Syracuse ended the season with a 7-2 mark, with Pitt and Army beating the Orange on successive Saturdays. This year Coach Ben Schwartz walder's squad is 3-1, losing a close 22-21 battle to Maryland at College Park two weeks ago. The Orangemen have defeated Oregon State (19.8), West Vir ginia (29-14) and Nebraska (28-6). Despite the Maryland defeat, Lion Coach Frank Patrick thinks the Orange are on a par with the 1959 national championship squad. Patrick scouted the Orange this year, and he said they were par ticularly impressive against Ne- yards and 9 touchdowns. Those nine TDs have accounted for all but two of Cleveland's touchdowns this season. 1:30 P.M■ THURSDAY. OCTOBER 19. 1961 braska last Saturday.
