PAGE TWELVE 15 Projects Planned by Corps The heart of Africa, the edge of Asia and the coast of South America will soon be acquainted with Peace Corps volunteers who are in training or in service with any of the 15 Peace Corps projects planned for countries in those areas. Approximately 700 volunteers, most of them college graduates, have been assigned to educational and development projells in Tanganyika, Ghana, Nigeria, Sier ra Leone, India, East Pakistan, West Pakistan, Malaya, Thailand, the Philippines, Colombia, Chile and St. Luria (West Indies Feder ation). Thirty geologists and survey ors trained at Texas Western University in El Paso, arrived in Tanganyika this month to sur vey projected roads. The roads when completed will aid farm ers in getting fresh produce to the markets faster. The University of California at Berkeley was the training center for 58 men and women who will fill secondary school teaching as signments in Ghana. Three teaching projects are planned to fill a request from the Nigerian government for approxi mately 130 Peace Corpsmen. The first group of 45 men and women trained at Harvard University for assignments in the eastern part of the country. A Puerto Rican survival train ing camp is the first stop (four weeks) for 50 volunteers select ed for the Sierra Leone educa tion project. Twenty-five volunteers will soon be scattered throughout the Punjab state in India to aid in small agricultural projects. Their training center is Ohio State Uni versity. Irrigation, farm production, anitation, and communication are a few of the fields in which 30 specialized men and women will work in East Pakistan. A similar project is planned for West Paki stan. The volunteers for East Paki stan are training in Putney, Vt. at the headquarters of The Experi ment in International Living. Malaya has requested 40 vol unteers from the Peace Corps to work as nurses and laboratory technicians in district hospitals. These volunteers arrived Mon day at Northern Illinois Univer sity for their eight-week train ing program. Last week 50 others assigned to Thailand for a project to aid edu cation and public health began training at tne University of Mich igan in Ann Arbor. CARE, Inc., will administer the program in that country. Introducing better farming methods and lowering the infant mortality rate in Chile are the goals for 45 volunteers . who ar rived in that country three weeks ago. This group was trained at Notre Dame University. The smallest number of volun teers is heading for a small coun try—St. Lucia—in the Caribbean to aid in soil and livestock im provement and production.
