The dramatic monologue was written by MacLiammoir from the works of Oscar Wilde and from his own views on the British play wright of the 1890's. MacLiammoir spends only part of the play impersonating Wilde and other characters in the story. Between these dra matic moments, he plays the role of reporter. observer and critic of Wilde who had a much disputed moral reputation. The play has been divided into two sections. Part I, "The Happy Prince and The Green Carnation" describes Wilde's sensitivity to the beauty of things about him and his characteristic sense of humor. It doses with the now famous charges of immorality against the playwright. Wilde's trial presumably takes place during the intermission since Part 11, "De Profundis," opens with a soul-searching let ter of that title which Wilde wrote to a friend while he (Wilde) was in prison. All the information which MacLiammoir used to assemble this monologue comes directly from Wilde's letter and other writings; and a great deal of it is read verbatim. Most of the remaining time is spent on MacLiammoir's comments on' Howard Taubman, New York York Times drama critic said, "Mr. MacLiammoir does not spare Wilde, nor does he judge him. He reveals him affectionately . . . (as an) . .. Irishman proudly pro claiming a compatriot's expres sion of the spirit of Ireland." And complaining about current events will not accomplish anything con structive, he added. Oliver cited the Cuban in• vasion. the Laos guerilla war, the recent erection of the East- West Berlin concrete wall, and the Congo situation as examples of failures in American Foreign Policy. The new nations of the world still insist on denouncing the United States as a colonialist pow er because it is, he said. That is, the United States thinks as a colonialist power and that thought creeps into its action, Oliver .added. He said the United States must realize that "the time has literally come when the world cannot exist one-fifth white and four-fifths other races," he said. Four other areas which should be recognized and strengthened, Oliver said, are a stronger world federation, more foreign aid, more evangelism about our democratic way of life and a continuing mili tary strength.
