WEDNESDAY. SEPTEMBER 27, 1961 Miller Gives '6l Booters Needed Lift With the season’s opener with West Chester less than two weeks away, Penn State soccer coach Ken Hosterman is remaining silent about the potential of his 1961 booters. Years of experience have taught the veteran Lion coach it is not healthy to predict the outcome of any given season. The constant threat of injuries is one good reason for remaining silent. During ihe lasi three years, when State's soccer fortunes have been on the decline, in juries have plagued the Lions unmercifully. In 1958 All-Amer ican Howie Maierhofer, the Lion captain, broke his leg be fore the season even started 'and did not play in one game. The following year the Lions lost their fop scorer, another All-American, Bill Fiedler, Last year there were no major injuries, but all through the sea son Hosterman was hampered by all sorts of “little” mishaps. Some one was always out of the lineup due to hindrances such as shin splints, sore insteps, twisted an kles, etc. At one point early in the sea-i son, State played without thei services of both regular fullbacks. Wayne Rodgers, last year’s cap tain, did not even make the trip to West Chester, and John Miller was hampered by a charlie horse, although he saw some action.! West Chester, of course, ran all; over State’s defense, winning 5-0.: So while running his booters through their pre-season work outs, Hosterman remains silent, but with a hopeful smile bright ening his face. With Lion captain Miller it’s a different story, The stocky senior fullback, who looks more like a defensive end. is optimistic about the 1961 season, and isn’t afraid to say so. Just as Hosterman is justified in remaining cautious, Miiier has good reason to be optimistic. The play of the sophomores has been a help, there have been no serious injuries thus far, and there is no dissention on the State squad, as has been the case in the past.
