SATURDAY. SEPTEMBER 23. 1961 Football, Tennis to Open New Intramural Season The kickoff of a new season of intramural activities will begin Monday, Oct. 4 when touch football and tennis singles, the first of 17 activi ties, make their debut.' Intramural director Clarence “Dutch” Sykes announced yester day that entries for both of these events must'be submitted at the IM office no later than Friday. Touch football play will last for six weeks with champions to be determined in both the fraternity and independent brackets. Last year Delta Sigma Phi won the fraternity title and Westmore land won the independent crown. New rules have added to this year’s game with the hopes that it will make contests more inter esting. Probably the biggest and most important new rule is that a team is no longer required to have five men on the line of scrimmage at the start of a play. Other new rules are: an offen sive team can now attempt to run kick-offs, punts and pass inter ceptions out of the end zone with out being penalized two points for a safety; a legal touch must now be made above the knees and fumbles can be recovered by the defensive team. Tennis singles also begins Oct. 4. Last year's fraternity champion, Whitfield Gary of Beta Theta Pi will be back to defend his title. The intramural program will again run the complete year with 17 events scheduled. One significant change, however, is that boxing has been dropped 3 Non-Pensylvanians In State's Starting Lineup Threee non-Pennsylvanians will be in Penn State’s opening-game starting lineup most out-of staters to open for the Lions in many years. Dave Robinson, Moorestown, N.J., will be at left end, Harrison Rosdahl, Ridgefield Park, N.J., will be at left end,! Park. N.J., at right guard, and- Dave Hayes, Bellmore, N.Y., at fullback. There are a total of 11! non-Pennsylvanians on the Nit-; tany Lion squad. Today is the last day to regis- ter for the drawing for a free Collegian subscription Three lucky freshmen will be awarded a three term sub- scription to the Daily Coileg ian, which will be mailed to the person of their choosing Don't wait! Hurry to the Col- legian office in the basement of Sackett before 5 P.M. today You may be a winnerl from the program and paddle ball added. Boxing, a sport that has been highly popular on campus for the 1 past 20 years, is being dropped this season because of lack of time, brought about by the new term plan. Sykes said that boxing probably will be brought back next year. A close look at statistics pub lished by the IM office shows that overall last season, the total participation in all 17 ac tivities amounted to 30,325. The statistics also showed that touch football was second in popu larity, exceeding only by bowling. ' Delta Upsilon again will be out to retain its 1961 All-Year point award trophy. Last year, DU’s three - year reign as football champs came to an end but their fraternity’s overall balance in every sport was more than enough to win the title. A new face, but not an unknown one, will make its appearance in the instramural office this sea son. The new assistant to Sykes will be a former Penn State gradu ate, Ben Amato. Amato, holds the intramural high jump record at G'l4h”. He coached at Westmont High School near Johnstown last year. PENNSYLVANIA 9-Gams Streak Gave Cincinnati Visions of Flag CINCINNATI (AP)—Where did the pennant-hungry Cincinnati Reds begin to knit together as a team? That nine-game winning streak in April was an indicator, | says Manager Fred Hutchison. i The run of victories came right after a streak of eight losses. It also followed a controversial trade with San Francisco that brought in much-needed second basemen Don Blasingame. “I think that really helped us," said Hutch, “but of course you can’t really put your finger on any one time, any one thing, any one game. There were numerous times when we bounded back.” Hutchinson said, however, that he thought the run of nine games gave the Reds the lift they needed at the time. He said, “You lake a team, that’s been in the second division; for several years and it’s natural for them to wonder what it would be like to be with a pennant con tender. "Well, after the nine-game streak which moved us near the top they felt they belonged up there.” Let Collegian Classifieds WORK FOR YOU (Located on the Ground Floor of the HUB) Carries A Full Approved Engineering Supplies BUY ALL YOUR SCHOOL SUPPLIES SAVE MONEY WE REFUND 50c WORTH OF RECEIPTS.
