Russian-Speaking Coeds
To Open 'Slavic Center'
“The Slavic Center,” an experiment in an all Russian
speaking living unit, will be undertaken this term by nine
coeds who will live in the Myra Dock Home Management
House.
The coeds participating either speak Russian fluently
or have completed at least one
year’s study of Russian
The idea for the experiment
was born last spring in an in
formal conversation between
Dean of Women Dorothy J. Lipp,
Dr. Thomas Magner, head of the
Slavic Department and organizer
of the project, and two of the
coeds who will participate in the
center, Magner said.
One of the coeds, Goldie
Laris, junior in Russian from
Ambridge, said that the group
will speak only Russian in the
house. She also said that with
the help of Dean Lipp and
Magner, the group will plan
various educational programs
to be held both in the experi
ment house and at dinners
which are to be provided in
the staff dining room in Redi
fer.
Plans are being made to have
campus experts and visitors in
the field of Russian studies and
related affairs speak at the din
ners.
Miss Laris said one evening a
week will be devoted to enter
tainment programs dealing with
the Russian language and the So
viet Union. She said that male
students in the Slavic Depart
ment will be invited to partici
pate in these programs.
The coeds in the experiment
house will be on an honor sys
iem with the approval of the
dean of women's office. There
will be no hostess in residence.

Miss Laris said that the group
will probably keep the same
hours as are observed by all
women students living in resi
dence halls.
If the experiment is a success
this term, the group will be per
mitted to remain in the house
next term if eight or more of
the participants decide to con
tinue with the program.
The purpose of the project as
explained in a report from Dean
Lipp to President Eric A. Walker
and Albert E. Diem, vice presi
dent for business, is to “...en
courage among students an atti
tude toward learning as a way
of life as opposed to the taking
of courses simply to fulfill degree
requirements.”
