There's More
Under the Hat
Than Just Hair
You won’t be strolling
around campus long before
you'll begin to notice a few
people wearing blue, gray or
black hats. You’ll probably
like these hats and may be anx-|
ions to get one. !
It’s not that easy, however, fori
these are special hats, worn only;
by special people—Penn State’sj
outstanding students.
These students are members of
hat societies. Penn Stale has 10
such organizations, each of which
carefully selects those who will
wear its hats.
To be asked io join a hat
society, a student must make
outstanding contributions to
campus activities such as stu
dent government, dramatics,
publications, forensics and ath
letics.
The student must also maintain
a specific All-University average.
Hat society members are active
all year and many of them will
start out this one by counseling
freshmen in the dorms, introduc
ing you to campus activities and
traditions and helping you to
learn school- songs and cheers.
Later on, you will see them
at the football games as they
form a colorful honor line for
the team to enter the field at
the start of each half.
Members of Mortar Board,
senior women’s hat society, wear
blue hats. Scrolls for senior wom
en, Chimes for juniors and Cwens
for sophomores are distinguished
by gray hats.
All the men’s hat societies fea
ture black hats. Parmi Nous and
Skull and Bones recognize sen
iors; Androcles, Blue Key and
Druids are for juniors and Delphi

men
