HUB Desk Staffers Harassed
By STEVE MILNER
"Are you sure the moon is
239,000 miles from the earth?"
a student asked a Hetzel Union
desk employee.
This is just one of many un
usual and challenging questions
put to these unsung heroes who
man the HUB desk. It is the job
of how do these mild-mannered
folks aid confused and even
abrupt people.
Working ai the HUB desk is
at times a routine and even
monotonous business, accord

run-of-the-mill days are few
when compared to those inter
esting, but frustrating experi
ences that are thrown against
these knights of the square
table.

Since a new wave of conven-,

Members of these travelling
contingents invariably ask,what
the HUB curtains are made of,
or if the floor is really plastic,
the employee said.
The best one last week, she re-:

naive asked her where the HUB,
was located. Then there's the
story of a visitor who asked the:
wearied, but patient person at the'
desk if he would accept a pair of,
trousers to be cleaned.
Stray animals seem to make'
the HUB their home away from'

Honed that during a thunder:
storm, a large, wet and soggy dog
came in out of the rain. That
probably would have met SPCA,

crowded ballroom.
Of course, this loyal employee

that is, the employee tackled the
dog and all wound up in one
soggy mess.
Windows are kept so clean in
the HUB that one student about
a year ago walked through a
plate glass panel. As he stag
gered to the desk, he said, and
we quote: "Where did that come
from?"
Bats in the HUB movie hall?
why, yes, that happens occasion
ally. During a science fiction ,
movie. some Nitfany area boys (as
was later found out from the
Dean of Men) let three large bats
out of a laundry sack. •
At first, students didn't know
if these weird creatures were
part of the movie or present in
the flesh. A male desk employee,
armed with an umbrella (from
the Lost and Found desk) was
sent forth to subdue the bats.
Not all desk employees survive
front-line combat as is borne out
by a worn-out veteran who an
swered the phone one morning as
follows: "Hetzel Union Desk, Joe
Hetzel speaking." Unfortunately
for this late employee, his boss
was on the other end of the line.
