PAGE TWELVt The Olympic Dilemma-- (Continued from page eleven) meat is better than another, the Games will lose all their purpose." Lion i,rack Coach Chick Werner, who was a member of the Olympic coaching staff in 1952 and is one of the most Tespected track authorities in the country, thinks the time has come when the Games no longer meet their purpose. "At this time, I fear a moratorium may be in order for our present Modern Olympics," he said. "We are too far from their most worthy and victorious purposes and intent." As the situation stands now, we have three choices. 1. Keep the status quo, with a few minor improvements such as having more distance events in high school—and continue to fall farther and farther behind Russia's professionals. 2. Throw amateurism out the window. Train athletes profes sionally And regain our lost prestige in the Olympics. 3. FOrego competition in the Olympics. • If we did the latter we undoubtedly would be called quitters ... by the . Russians. Now the questions arise. Is it wrong to quit something if it has been corrupted and is now at odds with its original purpose? Should we drop our philosophy of amateurism just to prove that we can mass-produce champions faster than Russia? Is one system of government better than another just because it can produce better athletes faster? Should the United States play second best under a set of clouded rules (what exactly is an amateur)? If the answer to these questions is no, why bother with crash programs. Sometimes it takes courage to set the example. The example may be forgetting Tokyo and 1964. Sports Briefs-- (Continued from page eleven) board of governors, the Knickerbockers said another suit will be filed later this week.
