Survey Shows Groups
Restrict Membership
Many of the fraternities and sororities which do not have'
discriminatory clauses in either their local or national con-,
stitutions practice some restriction of membership, according
to Ruth Falk, co-chairman of the SGA Committee on Inter-
Racial Problems.
"The ones which say they have
no clauses are just as prejudiced
as those having them but they
get around it 7 she said.
Miss Falk's statement mine as
a result of her committee's recent .
telephone survey conducted
among the officers or 54 fraterni-;
ties and 26 sororities. The purpose'
of the survey was to determine;
how many groups had discrimi-I
natory clauses and what action ;
if any was being taken to elimi- 1
nate them.
However, Miss Falk said that;
the survey also revealed that dis
criminatory policies are being
followed by some groups without'
written clauses. She did not re
veal the names of any of the
I,Totips involved.
She said that one sorority re
ported it did not take Jewish
girls because it wanted to main
tain its "friendly relations" with
those groups whose member
ship is largely restricted to Jews.
In another comment. Miss Falk
said that a fraternity stated it did
not rush Negroes because it felt
that they would be happier Jiving
in a group of their own.
In other questions, she said of
ficers of the. various groups were
asked to comment on DARE's
(Direct Action for Racial Equal-
ity) current • campaign to solicit
statements from student organiza
tions advocating the elimination
of discriminatory clauses from
sororities and fraternities within
the next five years. •

they felt DARE's idea was a good ,
one but that they would prefer
to handle the discrimination issue
without outside interference, she
said.
Also, she added that one soror
ity said it thought DARE was
against sororities and fraternities
and one fraternity said it had the
impression the organization was
trying to force all the Greeks to
go local.
