Injury May Keep Norman
From Running in Relays
A spike wound that required nine stitches may keep
Penn State miler Jerry Norman from competing in the
Quantico Relays Friday and Saturday.
Coach Chick Werner's English-bred star received the
injury in an exhibition meet at * * *
Ft. Lee, Va., over the Easter va- 7,1
cation. _ I
The mishap occurred during
the two mile race when Nor
man tried to move up on Olym
pian Deacon Jones. who had
taken a commanding 20-yard
lead.
Norman brushed a runner from
Ft. Lee in his bid to catch the
leader and pulled up with a badly
cut right foot.
He had five stitches removed
Monday and has been testing the
leg in workouts but probably will
have to pass up weekend compe
tition.
Two other injuries plus the
unseasonable weather have
combined to make things rough
for State as the outdoor opener
approaches.
Jim Schwab, who holds the
Penn State javelin record, in
jured his right elbow at Ft. Lee.
However, he expects to compete
Friday.
Steve Moorhead, another miler,
pulled a muscle in a workout
Saturday but Werner thinks he
will be ready for the Relays.
Before Norman's injury Wer
ner rated State's four-mile relay
team as the best bet to bring
back a victory from Quantico.
Norman, Moorhead, Herm Web
er and Howie Deardorff give
State a solid four-mile quartet.
Senior Mike Miller will replace
Norman if he can't compete.
If Miller does as well this year
as he did last year at the Marine
base, he shouldn't hurt State's
chances too much. He recorded a
4:19 at the relays last year.
On the brighter side of the
ledger, State's quarter milers
have looked especially good this
year. George Metzger ran a 48.4
in time trials Saturday and Don
Davies was clocked in 49.1.
Metzgar, who Werner rates as
"one of the better quarter milers,
at least in the East," recorded the
third fastest time in the nation
during the indoor season.
His 48.9 was bettered by just
two runners, Dave Mills of Pur-

be played Nov. 18 at Beaver Sta

They do if you use 'Vaseline' Hair, Tonic on your head
first! Most men use water with their hair tonic and
'Vaseline' Hair Tonic is specially made to use with water.
Water evaporates, dries out your hair. Alcohol and cream
tonics evaporate, too. But 'Vaseline' Hair Tonic won't
evaporate. It's 100 % pure light grooming oil replaces
oil that water removes. And just a little does a lot!
