TUESDAY. MARCH 28.-1961 LCIX Coach Hopes For Goad Year Lacrosse coach Earnie Baer thinks "next year" has finally arrived. After suffering through a frustrating season in 1960, Baer feels confident that the Lions will improve greatly on their 1-9 record. "This year's team is the most aggressive squad in my five years of coaching here at Penn State," Baer said yesterday as he watched his team on the practice field. "We have some good experi enced players and barring any serious injuries we have the po tential to be a real good club," he said. . The Lions open their 10-game schedule April 8, when they face Navy, last year's national cham pion. "The boys are really pointing for that Navy game," Baer said, "and we're going to give them a real battle." In two scrimmage games the team has impressed the Penn State coach. "I don't want to be too optimistic, but they have looked real good," Baer said. Baer is counting heavily on sev en returning lettermen plus soph omore Tom Hayes who he rates as a potential All-American. Gordon Bennett, last year's leading scorer, and captain Dave Erwin, who was honorable mention All-American a year ago, are the top returnees. Defense should be the Lions strongest position, "Man for man, I wouldn't trade our defense for any one in the country," Baer said. The cause for such optimism lies mainly in the rugged play of Irwin, junior letter-winner Andy Lockhart and senior Jim Ogden. At midfield the Lions are well balanced with two strong units. Hayes heads the corps along with Bennett and lettermen Dick Mears, Dick Swenson and Mike Raiser. Bennett wias an attackman last . year, but Baer has moved him to midfield, a position he played in high school. Baer expects his biggest prob lem to be the attack. "We have six men fighting for the starting job," he said, "but none have a lot of varsity experience." Dick Seelig, a 6-4 sophomore, Steve Schrader, Pete Erber and Dave Cook seem to have the in side track. Last year's starting goalie Jim Irwin returns to the nets and is backed up - by Howie Berkowitz. Smoky Called Shot On Infield Pop FT. MYERS, Fla. (/P) -- Some times it can be confusing when a catcher calls a play. Like the other day, when a high, infield pop up was hit against the Pitts burgh Pirates. "I came running out from be hind the plate," said Catcher Smoky Burgess, "and figured first baseman Dick Stuart had the best chance at it. So I started yelling `Dick! Dick!' "Then I looked around. We had Dick Gray playing third, Dick Groat at short and Dick Schofield at second with Stuart at first." "Who caught it?" a guy asked. "Dick did," dead-panned Smoky. Penn State is slated for 21 base ball games this spring. Eleven of the contests will be played at home.
