PAGE TWELVE eteorological Study eginning New Era By VICKI WENTZ If the earth's atmosphere were divided equally among the earth's people, each per son would receive 2,000,000 tons, said Dr. Harry Wexler, Director of Meteorological Re search of the U.S. Weather Bur eau at the . Graduate Lecture Serizs last night. Meteorologists are at the be ginning of a new observational era, Wexler said. The future holds such advancements as polar orbiting and equatorial satellites to give a more complete picture of cloud formations over the earth, a world weather center to which information could he re layed and a - cooperative system among countries whereby any na tion could receive direct informa tion. Information from the Tiros weather satellite which was put into orbit last spring, has been invaluable to meteorologists : ac- COLLEGE MEN Part-Time Employment 15 Hours Per Week Sales work for internationally known firm with offices in every major city throughout the world. Among the data received from satellites are: distribution of ice over the earth's surface, which is a great aid to ice navigation; snow depths, which give some indication of the amount of water locked up in snow, is an aid in irrigation; location of storm fronts, a big help to weather forecast ing; and measurement of infra red radiation, which is an indica tion of the rate at which heat is leaving the earth. Wexler concluded by comment ing that the advancement of meteorology is not only a tech nical one, but may become poli tically important if meteorologists in one country know what's going on above another country before that country itself knows. This would occur if one nation's weather satellites were more ad vanced than another's. He said it is the hope of the World Meteorological Organiza tion that information will be used for peaceful purposes. , - . --r.'....-i.I-i 1. 1: 1 i'''.: . ....-.: . .:: . ..::',-:_.'::!_..'-..'.;_.:-:... .:::.--...:...-,•-•:.-:...,........ 1 . :: . ._::...: . ...' .
