PAGE TWO Student Playwrights Aided by '5 O'Clock' By ANN PALMER Student playwrights have the chance to see their origi nal plays produced by the 5 O'Clock Theater, in per formances held at 5 p.m. every Tuesday in the Little Theater in the basement of Old Main. The theater was started by Warren S. Smith, associate pro fessor of theater arts, as a place to produce selected plays written in his playwriting course. Smith recommends the best plays written in his Playwriting' 21 class to members of 5 O'Clock and from there students interested', in direction of the scripts are free' to select and experiment. "The main feature of such a project is that interested persons, can experiment and learn tech niques of the theater at will," commented Judson Sanderson, In order to avoid duplication of social activities, TIM will support ISA CLUB HUBANA rather than holding its SHAMROCK SWING on Saturday. Students interested in theater experimentation can select a recommended script to work with. They must then select a cast. recruit a technical crew and direct the production. In a 5 O'Clock theater produc tion lighting, costuming and sound experimentation are widely used. All procedures are the same . as for a large scale production except that no major scenery is con structed. Some "script-in-hand" produc tions are given each year in which the rehearsal time is shortened. Since all casts and crew are recruited by the play's director, the 5 O'Clock Theater sponsors teas at 3 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday in the Green Room of Schwab to provide a means of contact for all persons interested in the project.
