Cagers Pull
63-56 Upset;
Play Tonight
By SANDY PADWE
Harry Litwack has been
coaching basketball for a long
time and he knows how to take
an upset in stride even though
it hurts.
Last night he just bit his lip,
pulled his hat down a little low
er and strode out of Rec Hall try
ing to figure how an NIT entrant
like his Temple Owls could lose,
63-56, to, Penn State, a team
struggling to hit .500.
“We played a better ball club
tonight,"* Litwack said with a
sad shake of his gray head,
"that's the only way I can ex
plain it."
As Litwack left, he shook hands
with John Egli, a coach who had
suffered through five straight
heartbreakers before his Lions
came through,, with their 10th
win against llMiisses.
The backslappers who show up
at times like this were crowded
around offering their best but
Egli was thinking ahead to the
Carnegie Tech game in Pittsburgh
tonight.
"We battered them on the
boards," Egli said, "I just hope
we saved enough for Tech.
They're always lough on us."
Most of Egli’s praise was aimed
at Gene Harris, the 6-3 center, who
played one of the finest games of
nis career.
The Lion junior scored 17
points, grabbed 12 rebounds and
came up with the key plays at
the right times.
One of those plays, a full court
fast break, in the closing minutes,
gave State the boost it needed to
come home in front.
Harris' goal put State ahead
SB-S 3 -with 2:20 left and when
John Mitchell followed with a
three-point play a half-minute

PHOENIX, Ark. (/P) I real
ize I have a big job ahead of me
in my first year as a manager.
But I’m sure every rookie man
ager would like to start out with
a guy like Willie Mays on his
side.
From what I've seen of Wil
lie the past few years, he hasn't
slowed down a bit from the
time we played together with
the Giants in the Polo Grounds.,
Since the Giants traded me in
1956. I only got to watch them
in action 22 times a year from
, opposing dugouis. Bui I saw
enough of them to believe that
it's a team with fine potential.
I’ve spent a good part of the
winter planning various moves
that I’ll put into use in spring
training. Certainly, I think we
have the materials to improve on
the club’s fifth place finish of a
year ago.
There is no shortage of good
players. Harvey Kuenn, whom we
got from Cleveland, is going to
be a big help. He’s always around
the 200-hit mark. Harvey’s been

JUMPIN' GENE HARRIS (22) of Penn reaps ror a ,0-
pointer in last night’s Temple-Penn State game in Rec Hall.
Temple’s Gary Kasmer (14) and Ken Kramer (15) couldn’t stop
Harris. State won in an upset, 63-56.
later. Temple was through.
State had a slight three-point
edge at halftime, 27-24, but the
Owls took command in the open
ing stages of the second half and
surged ahead, 41-40, with 10:50
left.
The lead jumped back and forth
until Earl Hoffman’s foul tied the
score at 47.
Hoffman then stuffed a rebound
through, Harris hit a foul, and
Mitchell canned a layup to put
State ahead 52-47.
Little Bruce Drysdale pulled
an outfielder the past few years,
but I might just put him at third
base. We’ve got Mays, Orlando
Cepeda and Filipe Alou in the
outfield.
Willie McCovey will be. given
every opportunity to win the
regular first base job. Both he
and Don Blasingame at second'
had disappointing seasons in
1960. But I feel that their good
performances the previous years
were a better indication of their
talent.
Both Ed Bressoud at short and
Jim Davenport at third missed
part of last season because of in
juries and sickness. However,
they are proven big leaguers.
There are no problems as far as
starting pitchers are coftcerned.
We’ve got Sam Jones, Mike Mc r
Cormick, Jack Sanford, Billy
O’Dell and Juan Marichal, and for
spot pitching, Stu Miller. We need
help in the bullpen, though.
All in all, we’ve got good pow
er, fine defense and adequate
pitching. It looks to me as though
it’ll be a five-team race and I ex
pect the Giants will be one of the
five.
