PAGE EIGVT Community Living Produces Change Drastic changes have come about on campus since the groundwork for a community living program was laid less than a year ago. The dean of women's staff, as well as women's govern ment have been revised to meet the needs of residence community living. The Women's Student Govern ment Association, known, for years by that name, became a member of the Association of Women Students, an internation al organization of women's stu dent government, last fall. The new AWS is made up of legislative and judicial bodies on both community and cam pis-wide levels. Judicial boards and elected student councils are located in each residence community. On the campus wide level, there is the AWS Central Judicial Board and the AWS Senate. The Central Judicial Board is made up of the chairmen of the local boards, the Central Board chairman, secretary and two oth er members. AWS Senate is made up of the presidents and treasurers of each community council; two repre sentatives-at-large fro in each class; representatives from the Women's Recreation Association, Panhellenic Council, Leonides and Central Judicial; the dean of women, Senate officers and a representative to International AWS. Dean of Women Dorothy J. Lipp has created new staff po sitions to meet the needs of res idence community living since her arrival on campus last year. Each community staff is headed by a residence community coor dinator. Two of the larger com munities, Pollock and West Halls- Atherton have assistant coor dinators as well. Each residence hall is staffed with one or more senior residents, graduate students who are on duty during the evening hours. The senior residents also work with the students in planning so cial and cultural activities with in the residence, according to the community plan. Each residence is also staffed with one or more hostess. These women handle most of the pa per work involved with sign ing in and out, according to the plan. They also work directly with the residance housekeep ing staffs. Junior residents, upperclass women who have volunteered for these posts, are assigned to about 50 girls in each residence. They are to perform the task of communications between the dean of women's staff and the women students. The following series will deal individually with the function and performance of each facet of AWS and the dean of women's staff. PENNSYLVANIA WANTED Librarian Says 2 Encyclopedias 'Badly Mutilated Within the past month two of the Pattee Library's new encyclo pedia books have been seriously mutilated, Mrs. Margaret K. Spangler, assistant librarian, said yesterday. A chapter on West Germany was torn from the' Encyclopedia Britannica, a $2OO set, and from the World Mark Encyclopedia, which is a $3O volume that was purchased just two weeks ago by the library. The greatest damage cannot be set in terms of the monetary value of the books but in the nuisance value, Mrs. Spangler said. The library's service is great ly depreciated by such mutila tions. In an effort to prevent maga zine loss, the current periodicals are now available only at the desk upon request. When the magazines were on the open shelves, they often disappeared, Mrs. Spangler said. Columbia - Southern Chemical .
