Cagers Drop Third Straight
Lost Second
Shot Wins
For Orange
By SANDY PADWE
Penn State stuck to the
script Saturday night and
blew its third straight game,
this time to Syracuse, 63-61.
Steve Berkenfeld, a Syracuse
co-captain, gave the Orangemen
(3-14) the win when he dropped a
five-foot push-shot with just
three seconds remaining.
It was the second time within
a week that John Egli saw his
Lions (9-10) lose under similar
circumstances.
Last Tuesday, West .Virginia's
Ken Ward hit on a corner jump
shot with five seconds left fo
give the Mounties an 80.78 win
in Morgantown.
Egli had visions of an upset
over the Mounties when State
took a five-point lead with 4.35
left but his Lions were too an
xious and mistakes eventually
cost them the game.
The veteran , ouch ran into
similar trouble at Colgate Friday
night.
After leading throughout most
of the first half, the Lions lost a
six-point spread by intermission.
With the pressura on and
Mark DuMars in State College
with the grippe, the Lions just
fell apart and Colgate won
80.72 thanks to a blistering sec
ond-half rally.
Then as Egli watched in utter
disbelief, Penn State pulled the
same act Saturday night in Syra
cuse.
The Lions were in command at
halftime, 40-33, and with 15 min
utes remaining they led by eight,
49-41.
But without DuMars, they sud
denly fell apart again and Syra
cuse wasted little time taking ad
vantage.
Midway in the :;econd half, the
Lions hit a cold streak and didn't
score a field goal for six minutes.
During that time Syracuse
was at the opposite extreme and
Pete Chudy's jump shot tied the
score at 55 with 8:51 left.
All-American football player
Ernie Davis put Syracuse ahead
by one, 56-55, and Loren James
gave the Orange a 58-55 lead at
7:07.
Gene Harris converted a foul
and Jake Trueblood tipped one

in to produce a 58-58 tie with
only 5:28 showing on the clock.
Harris temporarily gave the
Lions a 60-58 lead hut a foul by
Davis and a jumper by James put
Syracuse ahead 61-60 with three
minutes left.
After the Lions missed a
chance to go ahead, the Or

DuMars Returning
To Nitta.ny Lineup
(Continued front page one)
Virginia again is one of the top
teams in the nation.
Last week the Associated Press
ranked them 10tH in their week
ly poll and this week UPI ranks
them 14th.
The Mounties have won 18 of
their last 19 games, and currently
they're on a ten-game winning
streak.
The Mounties are an extreme
ly colorful team to watch. They
often fall behind and then re
sort to a devastating zone press
to pull them out of trouble.
Lion coach John Egli isn't ex
tremely worried about the Moun
tie press.
"I felt we got through it OK
down there," Egli said. "Mark
broke through a few limes Lind
Jake Trueblood got a real impor - -
