World War Brings
Little Lion to State
E=E==El
• During World War 11, amid'
bullets, 'bombs and fighting,
the "Little Lion" caricature
was born.
This symbol of Penn State's
prowess which regularly shouts or

game on Ridge Riley's "Football
Letter" to the alumni, was the

Although Wilson never actually

wanted them for his "Football

idea caught on and many people
started making their own sketches
of the lion in various positions.
At the present, Riley has a huge
collection of cartoons showing the
lion in all degrees of happiness,
disgust, chagrin, oblivion and
pride. Many of the sketches have

Here's one filter cigarette that's really different!
The difference is this: Tareyton's Dual Filter gives you a
unique inner filter of ACTIVATED CHARCOAL, definitely proved to
make the taste of a cigarette mild and smooth. It works together with
a pure white outer filter—to balance the flavor elements in the smoke.
Tareyton delivers—and you enjoy—the best taste of the best tobaccos.

He has also received several .
from a postman in Harrisburg
who noticed the "Little Lions"
in the Alumni News when it
canoe through the mail. Sharon
Gallagher. graduate student in
art and architectural history
from Allentown, has contributed
many drawings which have
been used in the various letters.
These little lion sketches have
been blown up for huge wall
panels which are on display in
Pollock Halls. According to Otto
Mueller, director of housing, ten
different "Little Lions" were cho
sen to depict the outstanding foot
ball games in Penn State history.
These sketches appear on 22
panels which are framed and put
under glass in each of the Pol
lock dormitories and in the Pol
lock Dining Area. Each drawing
is exactly the same as the original
sketch and has the game, date and
score of the game on it.
The games which are repre
sented include both victories and
defeats, the latter being games
Penn State was not ashamed to
lose, Riley said. They include the
Rose Bowl in '23, the Cotton Bowl
in '4B, the two Liberty Bowls, the
Ohio State game, and the Syra
cuse game in '59.
