campus? These are typical
questions asked at the Penn
State Room which is the re
pository for historical data on
the University campus.
Located on the fourth floor of
the Pattee Library, the archives
receives an average of five ques
tions each day, Mrs. Mary L.
Mairs, curator, estimates.
Some of them, such as those
above, are easy to answer be
cause they have, been asked
each year for many years by
fraternity pledges fulfilling
pledges duties, Mrs. Mairs said.

tions are 100 feet, President
Evan Pugh's portrait, and two,
respectively.)
The archives are sought out by
people with many different in
terests. A grad student writing his
thesis on Evan Pugh, a coed writ
ing a term paper on Penn State
traditions and the Department of
Housing seeking names for new
buildings all use the archives.

edge. When a student recently
asked how many window panes
are in the Pattee Library, the
staff had to say they didri't
know.
The Penn State Room is real

books by alumni and faculty pub
lications.

institution of 9 colleges, tuition
fees, and the Office of Admissions.
