Symphony
Like Jazz,
Concerning the ever-present controversy as what’s best
—classical or jazz music, a large percentage of musicians of
the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra offer the ideal solution.
They do both!
The Orchestra will perform at 8 p.m. Sunday in Recre-
AWS OK's
Hat Society
'Date' Night
A Penny- a-Minute Date
Night to be held this spring
was approved unanimously by
the Association of Women
Students Senate in a meeting
last night.
The date night is to be spon
sored jointly by all the wom
en’s hat societies. The proceeds of
the project will be divided among
the societies, for operating ex
penses.
Fraternity houses have agreed
to remain open until 2 a.m. that
night. A date has not yet been
scheduled.
On the Penny-a-Minute night,
a Saturday, two o'clock permis
sions will prevail, provided each
girl's dale pays a penny for
each minute after 1 a.m. that
she stays out.
Hat society women will take
charge of sign-ins that night in
order to alleviate the extra hour
of work for residence hall staffs.
In other business, the sen
ate passed a set of standard pen
alties recently drawn up by the
AWS Central Judicial board.
The penalties, which will be
printed and distributed to all
women students, involve penal
ties for faulty sign-out and sign
in procedure, fire drill violations,
failure to take withdrawals
within the required time period
and failure to report before a ju
dicial board when notified.
Approximately five members
of the University AWS Senate
and Dean of Women Dorothy
J. Lipp will attend the Nation
al convention of AWS which
will be held April 3 to 9 at the
University of Wisconsin, Mar
garet McPherson, AWS presi
dent, announced.
The next meeting of AWS to be
held Wednesday at 6.30 p.m. in
room 203 Hetzei Union will be an
open meeting. All women stu
dents are invited to attend.
A workshop on parliamentary
procedure for members of the
senate will be held on March 8.
Dr. Robert E. Dunham, instruc
tor of speech, will be the speaker.

ation Hall under the direction of
William Steinberg. Tickets for
the performance remain at the
Hetzel Union desk.
A recent visitor to a concert of
the Orchestra stopped in to a
suburban jazz spot on his way
home and nearly swallowed his
olive when he noticed the jazz
combo swinging on the bandstand.
There, beating out the rhythm
for a new jazz tune was the
very same bass player he had
| seen one hour before playing
; the music of Gustav Mahler to
i the exacting demands of Wil
liam Steinberg.
Joe Wallace, the bass player,
can’t understand why young peo
ple today refuse to try classical
music.
“I play the classics because I
like to and I play pazz for the
same reason. Music is music and
no matter how you slice it, the
good musician as well as the good
listener ought to be able to en
joy both to the fullest.” he said.
Wayne Pascuzzi, percussion
ist for the Orchestra, can play
a difficult Webern chime part
to the complete satisfaction of
William Steinberg and at the
next minute seat himself af Ihe
fraps and thrill dancers with his
jazz ability.
Trumpet player Frank Ostrow
ski alternates his efforts between
the Orchestra and a combo in the
Catskills during the summer.
Bob Leininger, another bass
player, toured the country with
Les Brown’s band before joining
the Pittsburgh Symphony Orches
tra, while Bernard Cerelli, elari-
Inetist, can be seen at almost any
off hour playing with various
combos in the Pittsburgh area.
