From his start in the town of Ishim in the Urals at the age of 14, Shekhlin worked his way up to his position as the world’s greateft gymnast. Shakhlin has received the title of Honored Master of Sports and is a member of the student sports organization “Burevestnik." He has won the all-around champion ship of the USSR four times. Supporting Shakhlin will be his five teammates on the team that finished second to Japan in the 1960 Olympics. Yuri Titov, holder of the prized European Cup, is the reigning world vaulting cham pion.
