SATURDAY. JANUARY 7, 1961 Engineers Aim for 4th Victory Against Lion Matmen Tonight By JIM KARL Penn State and Lehigh con tinue one of the oldest mat rivalries in the nation tonight at Rec Hall and the Engineers have a twofold purpose to keep their three meet winning streak going and to gain re venge for last year's 19-11 loss. A freshman meet is scheduled for 5 p.m. followed by the varsity clash at 7. The varsity meet will be tele cast over Eidophor. The Lions will be attempting a comeback after their 17-8 loss to Michigan before the holidays. State had previously whipped Army, 24-10, and West Virginia, 39-4. Both teams are ranked in the top ten. Lehigh is sixth and State is one notch lower at seventh. Lion Coach Charlie Speidel did not commit himself when asked to compare the strength of the two teams who meet for the 45th time tonight. "They have us out manned on paper," was his only comment. The Engineers have upheld glowing pre-season reports by easily defeating all opposition so far. They downed Cornell, 27-0, lowa State, 22-8 and Syracuse, 25-6. One of the highlights of the evening should be the 157- pound battle between Lehigh's Kirk Pendleton and Ron Pifer. Pendleton, labeled by Leeman "as good a wrestler as I've ever coached," has won matches by a decision and a default and pinned Syracuse's Joe Matisak in his last outing. Turner, Lehigh's captain for the second consecutive year, will go for the Engineers at 167. Speidel hasn't named a starter yet but John Barone is the likely choice. Jim Detrixhe and Phil Myer will provide the fireworks at 177. Myer won two in a row before losing to Michigan. De trixhe is undefeated in three bouts. First. off, it is the only year since 1951 which begins and e►ids with the Figure 1. Of course, when it comes to Figure l's, 1961, though distinguished, can hardly compare .with 1911, which, most. people agree, had not just two, but three Figure l's! This, I'll wager, is a record that. will stand for at least two hundred years! 1911 was, incidentally, notable for many other thing. It was, for example, the year in which the New York Giants played the Philadelphia Athletics in the World Series. As we An know, the New York Giants have since moved to San Francisco and the Philadelphia Athletics to Kansas City. There is a movement afoot at present to move Chicago to Phoenix— the city, not the baseball team. Phoenix, in turn, would of course move to Chicago. It is felt that the change would la broadening for residents of both cities. Many Chicago folks, for example, have never seen an iguana. Many Phoenix folks, on the other hand, have never seen a frostbite. There are, of course, certain difficulties attending a municipal shift of this size. . For instance, to move Chicago you also have to move Lake Michigan. This, in itself, presents no great prob lem, what with modern scientific advances like electronics and the French cuff. But if you will look at your map, you will fin(! that Lake Michigan is connected to all the other Great Lakes, which in turn are connected to the St. Lawrence Seaway, which Figfico w,i2rel`6,7f7y in turn is connected to the Atlantic Ocean. You start dragging Lake Michigan to Phoenix and, willy-nilly, you'll be dragging all that other stuff too. This would make our British allies terribly cross, and I can't say as I blame them. I mean, put yourself in their place. What if, for example, you were tt British workingman who had been saving and scrimping all year for tt stunmer holiday at Brighton Beach, and then when you got to Brighton Beach there wasn't any ocean? There you'd be with your inner tube and snorkci and nothing to do all day but dance the Lambeth Walk, This, you may be sure, would not make you NATO-minded! I appeal most earnestly to the residents of Chicago. and Phoenix to reconsider. I know it's no bowl of clwrries going through life without ever seeing an iguana or alrostbite, but ask you—Chicagoans, Phoenicians—is it too big a price to pay for preserving the unity of the free world? I am sure that if you search your hearts you will make the right decision, for all of us—whether we live in frost bitten Chicago, iguana -ridden Phoenix, or narrow-lapelled New I la Ven —fire first and foremost Americans! • But I digress. We were speaking of 19131, our new year. And new it is! There is, for one thing, new pleasure in Marlboro Cigarettes. How can there be new pleasure in Marlboros when that fine, flavorful blend, that clean easy draw filter, have not been altered? Marlboro never palls, never jades, never dwindles into dull routine. Each pack, each cigarette, each puff, makes you glad all over again that you arer a Marlboro smoker! So, Marlboros in hand, let us march confidently into pea. May good fortune attend our ventures! May happiness reign! May Chicago and Phoenivsoon recover froth their disappoint, thent and join our bright cavalcade into a brave tomorrow! The makers of Marlboro and of the new unfiltered king-size Philip Morris Commander join Old Max in adding their good wishes for a happy and peaceful 1961. Is North meet.; today and tomorrow.
