DuMars, Soffa Expected
To Wage Scoring Battle
By SANDY PADWE
Carnegie Tech basketball
coach Mel Cratsley started
quite a controversy in Pitts
burgh a few weeks ago and
the main figures—Penn State's
Mark DuMars and - Tech's Bill
Soffa—will be on the spot to
night.
Tlw lap-off will be at approxi
mately 9.p.m. following the Penn
State-Lehigh wrest Prig match.
Asked to compare, DuMars
and Sofia, the 5-11 backcourt
man who makes the Tartan at
tack go, Cratsley quickly replied
that in a one-on•one situation
he would take Sofia.
Thai was quite a statement
considering that DuMars is a can
didate for All-American honors.
Cratsley isn't charging his tune,
but he did clarify his statement
yesterday.
"1 think Bill Sofia is the equal
of anyone offensively," he said.
"I don't think there are very many
basketball players around who
can stop him in a one-on-one
ltituation.

ball than DuMars, but he is bad
defensively. That's why I'd have
to say DuMars is the better all
around player.''
DuMars probably won't get a
chance to guard Soffa tonight
because the Lions use a zone de
fense almost all the time, but it
would be quite a battle.
130th boys are prolific scorers
and are extremely fast.• DuMars
has a slight edge in scoring with
a 19-point average compared to
18.4 for Soffa.
Despite his high average, Soffa
has been somewhat erratic this
year. Add this to the fact that
Tech has a thin bench and it isn't
hard to figure why the Tartans
have a 3-6 record.

Gymnasts
Of NCAA
Penn State's gymnasts open
defense of their NCAA crown
tonight at Springfield, Mass.,
with the outcome of the meet
,shadowed by the uncertain
physical condition of Spring
' field ace Jeff Cardinelli.
Cardinelli, one of six stars in
vited to compete with the Ameri
can Olympic team for a position
against the Russians in next Sat
urday's meet at Rec Hall, has
been hampered by a shoulder in
jury.
Reports say that he has re
covered, but even Cardinelli
won't know until he tests his
shoulder tonight.
Lion Coach Gene Wettstone
said that his squad is not in tip
top shape yet, but he did say the
team rounded into good condition
during the holiday practice ses
sions.
Wettstone's champs were hit
hard by the graduation of Lee
Cunningham and Jay Werner, the
national all-around champ, but
Wettstone expects Gregg Weiss
to fill the gap.
Olympic coach Tom Maloney,
who saw Weiss perform at the
National Gymnastics. Clinic in
Sarasota, Fla., during the Christ
mas recess, echoed Wettstone's

opinion.
In fact, Maloney went as far
as saying that the Lion junior is
the most improved gymnast of
the year.
Weitsione is also pleased with
the improvement of Jerry
Schaeffer and Larry Yohn on
Oil flying rings and Ken Mor
row on the parallel bar.
Weiss, along with the much
heralded sophomore, Tom m y
Seward, should give the Lions a
strong one-two combo.
Wetistone's line-up for to
night's meet has Weiss working
on his three strongest events—
the side horse, horizontal bar
and parallel bar
Joining him on the side horse
will be two untried sophomores,
Gene Harlacher and George
Sayre.
Also teaming with Weiss will
be Keith Hagenbuch. and Seward
on the horizontal bar, and Mor
row and Seward on the parallel
bar. _ _ _
On the flying rings, Schaf
fer, Yohn and Morrow will
give the Lions a strong com
bination.
In tumbling, Tom Page and
Dick Criley will perform with
Seward.
Captain Bob Muinau will lead
the rope climbers, and will be
joined by Bruce Fosnocht and
George Williams.
