PAGE SIX ImprovingCagersWiliFace Blue Devils, Wake Forest By SANDY PADWE The pessimistic outlook that hung over the Penn .State basketball team a few weeks ago is slowly turning to opti mism following two straight wins over Purdue and Lehigh. However, with Duke and Wake Forest corning up in Charlotte, .N.C„ this weekend, no one— especially coach John Egli—is making any predictions. "The progress we have made since the Maryland game has been tremendous," Egli said yes terday. "The boys have realized that if they play smart. cautious ball, they have a chance against anyone. We have to play our game," Egli continued. "and we have to make the other team come to us." Since losing to Maryland, 64-47, at College Park a week ago, the Lions have topped Purdue, 63-59, and Lchigh 66-50 Tuesday night. Against Purdue Mark DuMars, State's All-American guard can didate, was the big star with 31 poinV but at Lehigh he only scored six. . So, much to everybody's sur prise, the rest of the starting lineup came through with double figures and the Lions walked home with an easy win. Lean Gene Harris, with 19 points and sophOmore Earl Hoff man with 14, were the top scor• ers against the Engineers while Jake Trueblood had 12 and John Mitchell had 10. "If we play the way we did against Purdue and Lehigh, I think we'll do OK down there this weekend," Egli said.
