As Construction
The "hanging wall" principle used in building the new
600-foot-plus HammOnd and the "bridge" between Home
Economics and Home Economics South was tested by the
experimental engineering department for a 40-story building
to be built in Montreal, according to Everett McLaughlin,
Plans Set
For Survey
On Housing
Tentative plans for a survey
of available downtown hous
ing were made last night at a
meeting of an unofficial group
studying equality of oppor
tunities in State College as
influenced by race, religion
and color,
The committee members in
clude representatives of the Stu

subcommittee on housing, DARE.
TIM, the State College. Chamber
of Commerce and the Centre Dai
ly Times.
The purpose of the survey, ac
cording to William G. Mather,
head of the Department of Soci
ology and Anthropology, is to
make a general study of the hous
ing situation in the town in re
gard to the nature and conditions
of the available apartments and
rooms. Mather has been asked to
head a group for drawing up the
questionnaires which will be
used for the survey.
The specific conditions suggest
ed by Mather include the facili
ties of available housing, its loca
tion, whether it is on a commer
cial or private home basis and
the preferences of the owner in
regard to the race, religion, eth
nic background and marital sta
tus of the tenants.

A building with curtain wall
construction, explained McLaugh
lin, is built so that each floor sup
ports itself by vertical highbeams
called mullions. This leaves no
job for the walls to do but to keep
out the elements.
On Hammond the silver-colored
aluminum upright beams are the
mullions which support the en
tre building, McLaughlin said.
The experimental engineering
.department tested the metal and
glass materials now being used
to construct the skyscraper in
Montreal's Place Ville Marie.
The department set up a full
scale mock-up of a metal and
glass curtain on which tests for
the movement of the mullions,
tests for the insulatidn of the ma
terials and for any leaks that
might develop in driving rain
storms were made, McLaughlin
reported.
A "hanging wall" building can
easily be identified by its char
acteristic arrangement of ex
terior finishings, he continued.
The building will have alternat
ing bands of glass and metal panes
if it uses the "hanging wall' prin
ciple, he emphasized.
'Breaks' Proven
Painful for Coeds
Two coeds learned the meaning
of the expression, "It's the breaks
of the game." Monday night.
Both girls broke their foot bones
while engaged in athletic activ

Cathy Creighton, freshman in
agriculture from Murrysville,
fractured her foot during the
warm-up period preceding an in

Sylvia Jenson, junior in physical
education from Earlsville, re

Both Miss Creighton and Miss
Jenson were admitted to the
