THURSDAY. OCTOBER 27. 1960 Harriers, Boaters Tackle Midshipmen By JIM KARL and BILL BARBER The Penn State cross country team, aiming for its first undefeated season since 953, will clash with Navy in a dual meet on the University Golf Course tomorrow. At the same time, Navy's unbeaten soccer squad will host Ken Hosterman's booters at Annapolis. Coach Chick Werner's har riers will be shooting for their fifth straight win- tomorrow.' They have defeated Cornell, Pittsburgh, West Virginia and defending NCAA champs, Mich igan State. Navy has 3-2 record w wins over Dul Pittsburgh Georgetown. Middies lost Maryland a Air Force. Bernie FIB ing, Bill Kigt and Joel HI have been big point get for Navy _ year. • Chick Werner Fleming is the only member of the trio to score .a first place in dual-meet competition. It came in the opener against Duke when Fleming flashed over the 3.7-mile course in 17:29. Navy's strong point is over all depth. This was demonstrat ed against Pitt and Georgetown last Saturday when the Middies offset the first and second place finishes of Pitt's Harry Stokes and Georgetown's Fred Verdisao NCAA Hits Kansas' Recruiting Methods BULLETIN SAN FRANCISCO (4 ) , The National Collegiate Athletic Asso ciation yesterday slapped a two year probation on the University of Kansas for illegal recruiting of basketball and football players. Terms of the probation cover football for one year and basket ball for two. Voted off the probatign list dur ing yesterday's meeting of the NCAA Council were Wyoming, Mississippi and North Carolina State. The first two are restored to full rights and - privileges effective today after being on probation a year. The four-year probationary pe riod for North Carolina State will end on Nov: 13. Navy's soccer team has been a little more successful than the Middie harriers. Navy won its first four games this season, downing Haverford (2-1), Bucknell (4-1), Air Force (3-0) and Brockport State Teach ers (4-1). The only blemish was a 1-1 tie with Penn last weekend. Hosterman Is looking forward to tomorrow's game. His hoot ers looked impressive against Atlantic Coast Conference champ Maryland last week even though they lost, 4-1. Navy Coach Glenn Warner said he- was "pleasantly surprised:' with this year's record. Warner was faced with a major rebuild ing program at the start of the year because nine of his 11 start ers had graduated. Navy's biggest asset has been defense. So far the Middies have allowed only four goals in five games. "I didn't expect it to hold up nearly as well as it has: Warner said yesterday. He termed the Navy offense "erratic and unsteady" in the first two games, and said that Na vy was losing possession of the ball after one or two passes. But he said that the Middies outplayed Penn Saturday, taking 27 shots to the Red and Blue's 10. ~'~=-, ~.~.:,; Note: Tim knew a glacier surface al ways chills the air above it—causing a down•draft.
