Press Celebrates
Newspaper Week
In the hustle-bustle of our
own Greek Week, the current
week's national dedication
may have gone unnoticed
"National Newspaper Week,"
an annual tribute to the nation's
more than 1700 daily and 9000
weekly newspapers, is being cele
brated from Oct. 15 to 21 this
From. the very beginning, Amer

watchdog fur society. The nation's

mestick." was suppressed by the
governor of Massachusetts after
only one edition.
From that day on, newspaper

the world. Newspaper reporters
help keep an "open society" -by
reporting news accurately and
promptly, the President said.
The plight of the journalist has,
changed considerably since "Pub-'
lick Occurrences" was suppressed.
The reporter is no longer wor
ried about criticising in authority,
his probleM is now far more sub-;
Ile.
Newspaper Week is being used
to renel.v a drive against what
many journalists consider a threat
against freedom of information—
unnecessary secrecy.
Backed by an opinion of the
attorney general, many federal
officials use their "executive
privilege" in stamping informa
tion as "secret' . or "classified"
'.which reporters think has noth
ing to do with national security.
To combat this journalists have
;been triing Newspaper Week to
shed light on the fact that such
a situation exists.
