Dr. Joseph Marin, head of the department of- Engineering Me chanics, was among seven profes sors from the United States and other countries who participated in the 1960-61 Humble Lectures in Science and Engineering pro gram. The purpose •of the program, given by the refinery of Humble Oil and Refining Company's Hum ble Division, is to provide the Refinery staff with up-to-date in formation in various technical areas through special graduate courses by outstanding profes sors. Marin conducted one of the seven graduate courses offered by the program. He gave lectures 'on "Solid State Mechanics" over a two-week period in August. Bowman Granted Leave John S. Bowman, professor of English composition, has been given a leave of absence for the spring semester. He plans to make a study of the teaching .of freshman English in colleges and universities through out the country. Even though modern electronic computers work at al. most unbelievable speeds, the scientist is way ahead of them. To close this gap, IBM created STRETCH, the world's fastest, most powerful computer. The first STRETCH system will go to the AEC at Los Alamos to aid in nuclear reactor design. This goliath can do a million additions or subtractions a second. It can "read" the equivalent of four million characters per minute from magnetic tape. It can print the equivalent of three good-sized novels every hour.
