THURSDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1960 Pitt, Lions to In X-Country The Penn State cross country team will be looking for its sec ond straight victory when it goes against Pittsburgh tomorrow on the Panther's home course. To build themselves up for the tough Pitt course in Schenley Park, the Lions spent yesterday afternoon running the slopes at the Centre Hills Country Club. Pitt suffered a big loss when Ron Rush graduated last June, but it didn't seem to hamper the Panthers in their opening win against Slippery Rock State Teachers College last week. Rush, one of the Panthers' all time great distance runners, had his best year against the Lions in 1958 when he' beat Ed Moran, Fred Kerr, and Dick Engelbrink. But last year he ran into trou ble and finished fourth behind Engelbrink, Herm Weber, and Steve Moorhead. However, Pittsburgh has . a runner who could make the fans forget Rush. Harry Stokes, a sophomore, ran exceptionally well in his freshman year and is expected to be one of the top Panther harriers this sea son. Against the Penn State frosh last year, Stokes placed second behind the Lions' Gerr;• Norman. Two seniors, co-captains Reed Injuries Hamper State Soccermen Injuries to key personnel con tinue to hamper Penn State's soc cer team in its drive to get back on the winning track. When the Lions go against Sy racuse here Saturday they may be without the services of cap tain Wayne Rodgers for the sec ond straight week. Rodgers injured his left ankle in a practice session before the West Chester game last week and was forced to sit out the contest which the Lions lost, 5-9. The senior fullback from Olney High School in Philadelphia, re injured the same ankle this week and also twisted his left knee. Rodgers isn't Hosterman's only' worry. Sophomore halfback Jay! Stormer is still battling splints and fullback Ken Link is , hobbled by a bad leg. Lion center-half Ed Hebei, who ; was kicked in the face in they West Chester game. will not see action this weekend, thus adding ; to Hosterman's woes. Fever Sidelines Layne PITTSBURGH (?P Bobby; Layne, No. 1 quarterback of the. National Football League's Pitts burgh Steelers, became ill yester day and missed practice.
