Syracuse, generally regarded as the national collegiate
football champion a year ago, will repeat in 1960.
That is the preseason opinion of the 48-man panel of
experts who vote this year in the weekly Associated Press
top ten poll
Twenty-six of them rated Coach
Ben Schwartzwalder's Orange
men the best in the country.
Twenty-one named Mississippi
and one favored Washington.
Giving 10 points for first,
nine for a second places vote,
etc., the Cotton Bowl champions
garnered 446 points. Mississippi
was second with 426 and Wash
ington third at 345.
Each of the experts named
Syracuse on his ballot, none low
er than seventh. Mississippi was
listed on 47 tickets.
The voting was scattered among
36 colleges and a second ten is
made up of Texas Christian with
54 points, Auburn 51, Georgia 48,
Northwestern 41, lowa 33. Ohio
State 29, Notre Dame 26, Tennes
see 23 and Penn State and Ar
kansas with 20 each.
Last year Syracuse romped
through 11 opponents, including
Texas in the Cotton Bowl, and
led all collegiate elevens in both
offense and defense.

known as the sizable seven, has
been reduced to three by gradu

on Bob Schloredt, a quarterback
who is blind in one eye. Despite
this handicap he hit per cent
of his passes last season and then
made Wisconsin see double in the
I4ose Bowl, 44-8.

Schedule Four Games
A four-game schedule is sot for
Penn State's 1960 freshman foot
ball team.
The Nittany Lion frosh will en
tertain the West Virginia fresh
man team Oct. 1, then will hit
the road for games against the
Navy Plebes, Army Plebes and
the Pitt freshmen.
Strong Ends

position on Penn State's 1960
football squad. Lettermen Bob
ATitinger, John Bozick. Henry
Oppermann, and Dave Alexander
top a group of eight varsity hold
over flankers.
Old Rivals
Penn State's football rivalry
with Pittsburgh began in 1893.
State owns 23 triumphs in the 59
games played, with three contests
ending in tie scores.
Talented Back
Halfback Dick Hoak led the
1959 Penn State football team in
pass receiving, punt returns, and
kickoff returns. He has been
switched to quarterback for the
1960 campaign.
Adequate Size
Penn State's 1960 football team.

"adequate size." The line will av
erage approximately 210 pounds,
the bacjtheld 184.
Non-Lions
Four members of Penn State's
grid coaching staff are not Penn
State graduates. They are Earl
Bruce, Washington and Jefferson;
Frank Patrick, Pittsburgh; Joe
Paterno, Brown; and J. T. White,
Michigan.
