Dr. Stannard has received an appointment to The Johns Hop kins Medical School for research in medical history. He plans to ,study the history of early science, particularly Greek and Renaissance medical history. . Lindstrom to Research In Photosynthesis Field Dr. Eugene S. Lindstrom, asso ciate professor of bacteriology, has been granted a six-month leave of absence from Feb. 1 to July 31, 1961. He plans to do research and study in the field of photosyn thesis at the University of Minne sota, working with Dr. Albert Frankel and Dr. A. H. Brown. Siegenthaler to Write On Speech and Hearing Dr. Bruce M. Siegenihaler, as sociate professor of clinical speech, has been granted a leave of absence from Feb. 1 to June 30, 1961. During this time he plans to do some professional writin g on speech and hearing and to ob serve clinical audiology programs to compile material to incorporate into seminar course work. Mourtint Plans Research Dr. John A. Mourant, professor of philosophy, has been granted a leave of absence from Feb. 1 to June 30, 1961. He plans to do research on med ieval philosophy and some writ ing on a text in logic. Joluistone, Jr., associate professor of philosophy, has been granted a leave of ab sence from July 1 to June 30, 1961, to accept a Fulbright Award in Ireland. Dr. Johnstone will lecture and conduct seminars in philosOphy at Trinity College in Dublin. Dr. Johnstone, who holds a bachelors degree from Haverford College and a doctorate from Harvard University, has been a member of the University faculty since 1952. Frink to Accompany Husband to Ireland Dr. Aline H. Frink, associate professor of mathematics, has been granted a leave of absence from Sept. 1 to June 30, 1961. Dr. Frink will accompany her husband, Dr. Orrin Frink, head of the department of mathe matics, who has a grant for teach ing and study in Ireland. While there Mrs. Frink plans to continue translating a Russian book in mathematics and do some research in calculus of variations. Mont Alto Instructor Awarded Scholarship John Muench, Jr., instructor in forestry at the Mont Alto campus, has ben awarded a scholarship to Duke University to work on his doctoral degree in forest eco nomics. Muench has been granted a leave of absence from Sept. 1 to June 30, 1961. Griiss Plans Research On Coal Mining Industry Dr. Phyllis R. Griess, associate professor of geography, has been granted a leave of absence from Aug. 1, 1961, to Jan. 31, 1962. She plans to continue her re search on the Commonwealth's anthracite coal mining industry, collecting data on the physical, cultural and economic facets of the industry for construction of maps and geographic analysis. She also plans to add to her list of publications• on the min eral geography of Pennsylvania. " New Professor Named Head Of El Ed Dept. Dr. A. Madison Brewer, chairman of the department of elementary education at the University of Nebraska, has been named professor and head of the department of elementary education at the University. He succeeds Dr. Charles M. Long who resigned as head of the department to accept a post as specialist in elementary educa tion in the Education Division of the International Cooperation Ad ministration in Washington, D.C. Dr. Brewer, a native of Itosalia, Wash., is a graduate of Eastern Washington College and received his master of arts and doctor of l education degrees, both in .ele- Imentary education, at Colorado State College. From 1946 until 1951, he was principal of the elementary school in Eastern Washington College, Cheyney, Wash., and for the past nine years has been on the faculty of the University of Nebraska. He has done research in the area of language in the elemen tary school. BREWER HUB Cardroom Displays Art From Ecuador An exhibition of Ecuadorian school art, arranged by partici pates in the Latin America Edu cation project at the University in commemoration of Ecuadorian Independence Day, Aug. 10, is on display in the cardroom of the Hetzel Union Building and will continue until Sept. 1. Sponsors of the exhibition are professor Dora Canelos, director and teacher at the Manuela Gar aicoa de Calderon Secondary School, Cuenca, Ecuador; Galo Chaves, inspector and teacher trainer in Imbabura Province. Also Blanca Andrade, demon stration teacher at the Experi mental Demonstration Center in Quito; and Eduardo Urdonez. provincial inspector of education in the Province of Guayas, Guay aquil. All are Ecuadorian pat•ti cipants in the Latin America Pro ject on campus. . WEST PENN POWER ef owned by people, not by government Grants Aid Mueller In Field lon Study The Office of Naval Research of the Department of the Navy has awarded a grant of $25,000 to Dr. Erwin W. Mueller, research professor of physics, for research and improvement of design of the field ion microscope. This is a continuation of sup port by this office of Dr. Muel ler's research with the microscope which he invented. The research is a more detailed investigation of the working prin ciples of the microscope, which is used to study the atomic struc tures of materials. Recent successful experiments at the University, he said, have increased the image intensity of the microscope by a factor of 50, and eventually he hopes to be able to observe and follow mo tion of dislocations in metal crys tals on the atomic scale.
