Augustine Observes
Soviet Ed Changes
While the United States is worried about revamping its
education system in line with that of Russia, the Soviets are
evidently trying to pattern their system after the U.S., accord
ing to Dr. P: H. Augustine, supervisor of elementary educa
tion and consultant for the Northwestern School district in
Erie County and a summer ses
sion instructor at the University.
Their Minister of Education suf
fixed everything he said about the
Soviet education system with
"like you Americans," said Dr.
Augustine.
"He said, 'We now have 10
years of schooling, but we are
aiming for 12, like you Ameri
cans.
'We van every child to have
the same education, like yo u
Americans.' "
Dr. Augustine, who took an in
dividual tour of Russian schools
in the Moscow area, related his
experiences at a luncheon meeting
of lota Alpha Delta, counseling
education fraternity, in the Hetzel
Union building yesterday.
"The Soviets applaud high
academic standards," said - Dr.
Augustine, who met one stu
dent who got his room, board
and books free plus 700 rubles
(about $175) per month.
"Every high school student gets
on-the-job training," he said.
'They have to work one or two
days a week and more if they
have a light academic load.
"They have special schools
where all classes (not just the
language'l are taught in French
and English.
"They can learn English in
either the British or American
brogue, but they all speak Ameri
can on the streets."
He said it is reported that
this is so because they listen to
Radio Free Europe et home.
Dr. Augustine said he was dis
appointed to find out that the
American government inhibits
correspondence between Ameri
can and Russian students. He said
he was told- by Central Intelli
gence Agency officials that any
American found on a Russian's
correspondence list could never
get a job in Washington.
Dr. Augustine. who is also a
minister, said that although Chris
tians are persecuted. the few

churches in Moscow are jammed
for every service, even though
those who enter, in effect, lose
their citizenship.
He said he met a noted Chris
tian dental clinician and a doctor
who both said as soon as there
are enough Communists to fill
their professions, they will be
cleaning streets to survive.

Mrs. Paul McCleester spoke at
the last meeting about her experi
ences in the Sudan where she
lived with her husband for sev
eral years. She talked about the
social and political problems fac
ing that country and of her life
among the Sudanese.

For Students
Five professors at the Univer
sity have formulated into a grow
ing business an idea that arose
from a need for better selected
reading materials that will help
to broaden the scope of certain
courses on the high school level.
They have developed Uni-Kits,
which are collections of about 25
books, planned and built around
a specific unit of study for use by
teachers as background and refer
ence material for integrating spe
cial concepts into regular high
school courses.
Dr. M. Jerome Weiss, assistant
professor of education, supervises
the editing of the kits and four
other faculty members collabor
paring the kits and writing teach
ers' guides.
They are Dr. James Gemmell,
professor of education; Dr. Wil
liam J. Page, assistant professor•
of education: Dr. H. Seymour
Fowler, associate professor of na
ture and science education, and
Dr. Burton E. Voss, assistant pro
fessor of education.
