COLLEGE: THE FOE OF EDUCATION
In your (|iiest for a college degree, arc von becoming a tmnow
*|>eemhcl, or are you being eilmatod m the broad, cla-sical
acn.se ol the word’’ Tin- question w being asked today hy many
.serious |aspple—meluduiy mv harher, my ]xi(lintrist, and my
little dog S|H>t - and it would he well to seek an answer.
I.et us examine our aouls Are we becoming experts only in
the confined area ol our majors, or docs our knowledge range
far and wide'’ Do we, for example, know who fought in the
battle of Salamis, or Kant’s epistemology, ol Planck's constant,
or the voyage ol the llenyle, or Palestrina's cantatas, or what
Wordsworth waa doing ten miles above Tintcrn Abliey'.’
If we do not, we are turning, alas, into s[>ecialists What,
then, can we do to e,- ica|ic this stunt jacket, to broaden our
vistas, lengthen our horizons, to become, in short, educated?
Welt sir, the first thing we must do is ihiow away our curricula.
Tonunrow, instead of going hi the same old classes, let us try
something new, I.et us think of college, not as a rigid discipline,
but tut a kind of vast smorgasbonl, with all kinds ol tempting
intellectual tidbits to sample and savor. Let us dive m. I-et
our |MUit-up appetites roam and snatch where they will.
kt m mmnt out
We will st.ul the duv with a stimulating seminar in HiUiti!
artifacts. Then we will go over to maiine biology and spend a
liappy Imur with tin" molliisks. Then we will open our pores t,y
dlillmg with the l{( HV for a spell Then we'll go ox er to journal
ism and sciamhle a lout ol lloilnni Then we ll go to the medical
school and palpate a few spleens. Then we’ll go to lmmc
economies and liaxe lunch
And between classes we ll smoke Marlboro Cigaiettes This,
lei me emphasise, is not an added fillip to the hioadenmg of our
education, it is an essential To learn to live richly and well is
an impoi tail! pai t of ('duration, and Mailhoros are an important
part of hying iielily and well. Do you think flavor went out
when lilteis came m'’ Well, ha-ha, the juke is on you. Marlboro,
with its Select rate tiltei, delixeis flavor m full measure, flavor
without stmt oi compromise, flax or that wrinkled care derides,
flavor holding both its sides This triumph of the tobacconist's
art conies to von in suit pack or flip-top box and can Ih 1 lighted
with match, lighter, candle, Welsbaeh mantle, or by rubbing
two small Indians together.
When we have embarked on this new regimen —or, more ac
curately, lark of regimen—we will soon lie studded with cultuie
like a ham with cloves When strangers accost us on the siieet
and say, "Wlmt was Wordsworth doing ten miles alxwe Tintern
Ahliev'.”' we will no longer slink axvav in silent abashment. We
will reply loud and clear
“As any truly educated person knows, Wordsworth, Shelley,
and Keats used to go the Wuldieombe Fair every year for the
poetry-writing contests and three-legged races, laitli of which
they enjoyed wildly. Well sir, imagine their chagrin when they
arrived at the l’.ur in I77ti and learned that Oliver Cromwell,
jittery because (iuy Fawkes had just invented the spinning
jenny, had canceled all public gatherings, including the Widdi
eomlie Fair and Liverjtool. Shelley was so upset that he
drowned himself in the Kay of Naples, Keats went to London
and became Samuel Johnson, and Wordsworth ran blindly into
the forest until he collapsed in a lieaj) ten miles ahoxe Tintern
Ahliev. There he lay for sex oral years, sobbing and kicking his
little fat. legs At length, peace returned to him. He composed
himself and, noticing for the first time the lieauty of the forest
around him, he wrote Joyce Kilmer's immortal Trees . . . And
that, smartv panls, is what Wordsworth was doing ten miles
above Tintern Abbey." # iimo m*« Biwim»»
Poets and peasants alike know that if you like mildness but
you don't like Utters, you can’t do better than Marlboro’s
companion cigarette—Philip Morris,
