Wettstone's Gym Show
Drew 14,000 in 2 Days
By JOHNNY BLACK
Assistant Sports Editor
The NCAA gym tourna
ment in Roc Hal) this week
end was another colossal spec
tacular (in Hollywood lan
guage) for super showman and
promoter Gene Wettstone.
Over H,OOO fans crowded their
way into the thiee sessions of the
fust national tourney held here
Jn the hotbed of collegiate gym
nastics and were tieated to some
of the finest competition in NCAA
history as well as ear-pleasing
and eye-filling extias such as the
Blue Band and Miss Pennsyl
vania.
‘‘This year produced the stiffest
competition and the most spiut
of any tourney,” said Wettstone.
Kurt Beckler, former Swiss
gymnastic great, who was here
for part of the tourney said,
"It is the most organized meet
I've ever seen."
Indicative of the popuianty of
the sport at Penn State as com
pared with the rest of the coun
try, every visiting gymnast inter
viewed said that Saturday night’s
ciowd was the largest he had ever
performed before.
Last year’s national tournament
at California drew only a couple
hundred fans for the finals and
the attendance was even thinner
at the prelims.
Wettstone. when asked the size
of last year’s prelim crowd, said,
“About three ”
"Three hundred?"
"No. Just three people and

place because threre were 11
finalists due to a tenth place tie
in the preliminaries,
Penn State's three rope
climbers chipped in 13 points
towards the Niltanias' over
whelming victory. Junior Bob
Mumau had a 3.6 for the sec
ond straight night and tied for
fourth place. Vince Neuhauser
failed to touch on his first try
and played it safe on his sec
ond for a 3.7 and a sixth place
tie. while Bill Fosnocht tied
for eighth in 3.9.
Illinois’ A 1 Barasch out
scored his nearest rival by
eight points to cop the tum
bling. Barasch, a junior, scored
a 96 while Southern Illinois’
Len Kalakian and 1959 runner
up Jack Wiley took second and
third, respectively.

Art Shurlock, California’s out

was very disheartened when the
crowd applauded his miscue on
his first long horse vault, thus
allowing the Lions’ Jay Werner

But Saturday Shurlock said he

for unnecessary taxes ?
Of course you wouldn’t take on such a staggering
debt yourself. But you and other taxpayers may
have to share this whopping burden in new taxes!
What would it be for? To put the federal gov
ernment farther into the electric light and power
business. And it will be a reality if the promoters
of such federal "public power” get their way.
Already, such spending for this purpose has cost
taxpayers about $5,500,000,000! (That’s five and
a half billion dollars.)
Is $10,000,000,000 more tax spending really
necessary? Not at all. Independent electric com
panies like yours are able and ready to fill Amer
ica’s growing needs for low-price electricity. And
they don’t depend on your taxes to do the job.
Unnecessary tax Bpending for federal "public
power” goes on mainly because bo few people
know they are paying the bill. But it can be
stopped as soon as enough people do know. Will
you help spread the word?
