RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (JP) Hundreds of thousands
of Brazilians welcomed President Eisenhower with cheers
and a blizzard of confetti and streamers yesterday. The
crowds were described by police as the greatest for any visitor
in Rio de Janeiro's four-century history.

berserk mountaineer killed
four persons—three of them
women—and wounded at least
five others before officers
killed him in a blazing gun
battle yesterday.
Dan Raymond, 42, a pipeline ,
walker for a natural gas company,;
was shot dead after he dived'
from a second story window of
the house where he had been:
holed up eight hours.
Two of the women were found'
outside Raymond's home at Chalk
Hill—about eight miles east of
Uniontown. They were identified'
as Mary Frances Sislor, 61, and;
Edna Maes, 53, both of Ohiople.
State Police theorised Ray
mond shot the women as they
drove past his house. One of
the women apparently tried to
run away from the car and was
shot down in the road.
The other woman killed was
May Maust, 20, of Farmington.
She was found in an auto,
along with her wounded husband,
Carlos, and their two children,
Mary 3, and Eddie, 18 months.
Shot to death earlier was INil
liam Burd, 49, a Formington, a
highways maintenance foreman.
It all began when Raymond
flagged down the highway
maintenance men and asked
them to cinder his driveway. He
returned to the house and sec
onds later opened fire.
One shot cracked the windshield
of the truck and struck Burd in
the chest. Richey, who already
had begun to scatter the cinders,
yelled: "Get the truck out of
here."
Although mortally, wounded,
Burd started up the truck but a
second shot hit him in the mouth.
The truck crashed against a tree.
Burd was dead on arrival at the
Uniontown Hospital.
Mrs. Raymond, mother of three,
told police she had fled with her
children to a neighbor's home
Tuesday night. She explained her
husband had been suffering from
a nervous disorder.

Eisenhower, hailed as a cham
pion of peace, said he was great
ly impressed by the turnout. He
smiled and waved as packed
throngs of men, women, and chil
dren acclaimed him on a drive
along the skyscraper-lined Ave
nida Rio Branco, the main busi
ness street, and the long palm
dotted drive fronting on Guana
bara Bay. The drive took more
'than an hour.
Eisenhower took up the ser•
ious business of this four-nation
South American tour in re
sponding to an official welcome
before the parade and in an ad
dress to Brazil's Congress after
ward.
With the Communists evidently
in mind, he sounded a hands-off
warning to any ideology threaten
ing to deny American nations the
right to choose their own way of
life.
He called for the banishment
of war and diversion of armament
money to global attacks on dis
ease, ignorance and poverty.
He suggested a speed-up in
studies for, promotion of the
Western Hemisphere's economic
development.
But the big show was in the
broad streets this bright but hu
mid summer day. The tempera
ture was about 80 degrees.
Samba bands were out in this
city of three million, nestled be
tween the mountains and the sea,
long before Eisenhower's big jet
roared in from Brasilia, the
Isprawling new capital-to-be 600
miles northwest of Rio.

To Fight Action
With Filibuster

civil rights battle, announced yes
terday that they will fight back
with all the obstructive tactics of
a filibuster.
Beginning today Sen. Richard
• B Russell (D-Ga) said, the South
erners will not permit the Sen
ate to transact any business that
requires unanimous consent.
The unanimous-consent device
is much used to speed along
Senate work, and its absence
could be a considerable handicap
Russell said obstructive devices
would be in order as retaliation
to the call by Sen. Lyndon B
Johnson (D-Tex), the Senate lead
er, to begin around-the-clock Sen
ate sessions Monday.
Continuous sessions could be
expected to wear down physical
ly the Southerners fighting off
new federal rights legislation.
A foremost backer of lights
legislation, Sen. Jacob K. Javits
(R-NY), said that day and night
sessions are a necessity if the Sen
ate is ever to pass on whether to
help Southern Negroes vote.
